Back in the studio, flipping through pages already worn from travel. Energized from travel and excited to be getting back to work!

Just getting back to the studio after a beautiful trip abroad.

Here's another recent sketch for my Travel Tuesday post from the bustling streets of Tokyo to the serenity of Hie-Jinja Shrine. I loved sketching the little dragon fountain—it felt like discovering a secret world in the heart of the city. 🐉❤️

Just returned from a journey that stretched from Tokyo to Alaska—sketchbook in hand the entire way.

I’ve been thinking a lot about how artists before us traveled and observed the world. This month, I’ll be sharing pages from my sketchbook alongside a few artistic influences from other artists that I have been studying.

Different places. Different centuries. But the same question: how do we really see what’s in front of us?

I’ve been revisiting Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji by Katsushika Hokusai while traveling.

What strikes me isn’t just the iconic wave—it’s how he returned to the same subject again and again. Different light. Different mood. Different story.

It’s a reminder that repetition in art isn’t redundancy—it’s devotion.

Travel Tuesday ✈️🎨 A recent sketch from my sketchbook: Sapporo, Japan. The city’s fish market is a delight for the senses! Here’s my sketch of the ‘Octagon Fish’—labeled ‘For Sashimi.’ A local delicacy, especially when served fresh. 🐟✨

Do you have a favorite seafood you’d try anywhere in the world?

I recently came across the Finnish artist, Helene Schjerfbeck.

Her portraits are quiet—but they don’t let you go.
There’s something stripped back, almost raw.
I love her approach and am inspired her painting states of being and mortality.

Packing up and heading out—Tokyo to Vancouver.
Stepping away from the studio for a bit, but not from the work.

I’m bringing a sketchbook— collecting moments.
I'll be sharing more...

I've paid a couple of visits to the Milwaukee Art Museum this month, and spent some time with the work of Gertrude Abercrombie.

I don’t usually gravitate toward surrealism, but this felt different.

Quiet, a little strange, very intentional.

I left wanting to understand more—and couldn't resist bringing a bit of Gertrude home with me.

I’ve come back to portraits.Faces that hold your gaze. Not asking for attention—but not looking away either.

I’ve come back to portraits.
Faces that hold your gaze.

Not asking for attention—but not looking away either.
