Professional Licensure: Why it matters and why it’s being debated
Right now, there’s an important conversation happening across many professions, including surveying, about the future of professional licensure.
Licensure isn’t just a title. For surveyors, it’s a way to ensure that people trusted with measuring and mapping land are qualified, accountable, and working in the public interest. Licensed surveyors protect property rights, infrastructure safety, and legal clarity.
Some policymakers and organizations are pushing for changes to licensing requirements, including arguing that they can be barriers to entry for new professionals. However, many in the surveying community, including NSPS, are concerned that weakening licensure could reduce accuracy, accountability, and public trust.
NSPS continues to monitor developments, advocate for informed policy, and educate legislators and the public about why professional licensure matters in surveying.
