Foam soles on a metal roof may look strange, but they serve an important purpose. Their sponge-like surface provides traction—even on wet metal—while helping protect the roof’s finish from scratches.

They improve grip, but proper fall protection still matters.

Have you ever seen these used?

A small roofing detail can make a big difference.

Instead of screwing this transition metal down, we bend and clip it into place. That means a cleaner finish with fewer exposed fasteners and fewer unnecessary penetrations through the metal.

It takes a little more work—but this is how we believe a standing seam roof should be finished.

There’s more than one way to support a deck, and the right choice can depend on the size and design of the project.

For this deck, we chose poured concrete footings. Concrete blocks can work for some smaller decks, but with the size of the deck we were building, we wanted the solid foundation that properly sized poured concrete footings provided.

A new standing seam metal roof for this cozy cabin by the Satsop River.

We replaced the aging asphalt shingles with a dark brown standing seam roof that complements the cabin’s natural siding and wooded surroundings beautifully.

Unlike exposed-fastener metal roofing, standing seam conceals the fasteners beneath the panels. This eliminates rows of weather-exposed screw penetrations and helps create a durable, lower-maintenance roof that can last 50–70 years when properly installed and maintained.

This old cedar shake roof has seen better days. 😬

Cracked shakes, missing pieces, and cedar so brittle it was crumbling as we worked around it—not exactly ideal on a steep roof in the summer heat.

We replaced some of the worst shakes to buy the barn some time, but this is a temporary repair, not a long-term solution. Eventually, this roof needs replacement, and metal would make a lot of sense for longevity.

But there’s something pretty cool about that old cedar look…

What would you put back on it—CEDAR or METAL? šŸ‘‡

You’ll probably never see this part of your metal roof again. šŸ‘€

Underlayment goes directly over the roof sheathing, underneath the metal panels. The metal sheds most of the water, but we still want that extra layer of protection underneath it.

Especially when you’re installing a roof that could be there for decades.

Sometimes you’ve gotta appreciate the last guy’s work 🤣

These shingles were stapled down, which definitely made tear-off a little easier for us. šŸ˜‚

Easy to remove? Yep.
How we’d install them? Definitely not.
