In our previous post, we talked about how native pollinator gardens donāt have to be random to feel natural.
That same idea applies to prairie plantings ā but on a larger, more expansive scale.
A native garden often uses groupings, repeated drifts, and carefully chosen plant combinations to create a designed landscape with rhythm, seasonal color, and pollinator value. A prairie, by contrast, is typically broader, more dynamic, and more community-based. It relies on grasses, sedges, wildflowers, and natural competition working together over time to create a living system.
But hereās the important part: whether itās a smaller pollinator garden or a larger prairie installation, native plantings still need design intention.
They are not abandoned spaces.
They are landscapes with purpose.
Our latest prairie installation was designed to bring movement, seasonal color, pollinator habitat, stormwater benefits, and long-term ecological value to the landscape. But with native plantings, design matters just as much as plant selection.
Thatās where the concept of ācues to careā comes in ā a term coined by Michigan landscape architecture professor Joan Iverson Nassauer. The idea is simple: when naturalistic landscapes include intentional signs of human care, people are more likely to understand, accept, and appreciate them.
In a prairie planting, those cues might include clean edges, defined paths, thoughtful plant groupings, mown borders, signage, repetition, or a clear transition between the wild and the formal. These details help communicate that the landscape isnāt neglected ā itās purposeful.
Native prairie gardens can be lush, dynamic, and even a little wild ā but with the right design framework, they can also feel polished, welcoming, and at home in residential and public spaces.
This installation is just beginning its journey. Over time, it will fill in, shift with the seasons, support countless insects and birds, and become more beautiful with age.
Because a prairie doesnāt just decorate a space.
It brings it to life. š¾
