💧 YOUR LAWN NEEDS WATER! 💧

Southeast Texas is DRY. We have now gone over a month without a widespread rain event, and lawns across the area are beginning to show the effects.

🌱 Irrigation is critical right now.

Even a professionally fertilized and treated lawn cannot stay healthy without adequate moisture. During extended hot, dry conditions, insufficient watering can lead to:

☀️ Severe drought and heat stress
🟤 Thinning and browning turf
🐛 Increased chinch bug pressure, especially in St. Augustine
🌱 Weakened roots and slower recovery
🦠 Greater susceptibility to disease and other stresses

Our recommendation: Water deeply and thoroughly rather than lightly every day. Most established lawns should receive approximately 1–1.5 inches of water per week, adjusting for your soil, grass type, and irrigation system.

An easy way to check your system is the tuna-can test: place several empty cans around the lawn while your irrigation runs and measure how long it takes to collect the amount of water you need.

⚠️ Don’t wait until your lawn is completely brown to increase watering. Curling or folded blades, a gray/blue appearance, footprints that remain visible, and dry soil are all signs your lawn needs moisture.

We’re doing everything we can on the fertilization, w**d, disease, and insect-control side — but irrigation is the one part of the program Mother Nature normally helps with, and right now she isn’t cooperating! 💧☀️

Fungus thrives in high moisture! Overwatering can be just as bad as underwatering and this is a perfect example of why a preventative fungicide is critical this time of year.

🔥 Three weeks of intense heat and little to no rain has lawns across Southeast Texas under stress.

Whether you have St. Augustine or Bermuda, now is the time to pay close attention to irrigation.

💧 Lawns need about 1–1½ inches of water per week (including rainfall) to stay healthy during periods of extreme heat. ‼️‼️Irrigation with a run time of 10-15 minutes, 2-3 times per week is likely not near enough.

🌿 St. Augustine:
Hot, dry conditions increase the risk of chinch bug activity. These insects thrive in drought-stressed turf and can quickly cause yellowing and dead patches if left untreated.

🌱 Bermuda:
Bermuda is more drought tolerant, but prolonged heat and lack of moisture can still lead to dormancy, thinning, and increased w**d pressure. Consistent watering helps maintain color, density, and recovery.

✅ Best practice: Water deeply 2–3 times per week rather than a little every day. Deep watering encourages deeper root growth and better heat tolerance. This is likely to be 30-45+ minutes of irrigation per zone, 2-3 times per week.

At Texas Turf Specialists, we’re keeping a close eye on lawns as these conditions continue. Proper irrigation, timely fertilization, and early detection of insect activity are the keys to keeping your lawn healthy through the hottest part of the summer.

🍂 Large Patch Season Is Almost Here!

As temperatures begin to cool, Large Patch fungus becomes one of the biggest threats to St. Augustine lawns in Southeast Texas.

⚠️ The problem? By the time you see brown patches, the fungus has already been damaging your lawn for weeks. While treatments can stop it from spreading, they can’t undo the damage that’s already been done.

✅ That’s why preventative fungicide applications are so important. Protecting your lawn before symptoms appear is the best way to keep it healthy through the fall and winter.

If you want to give your lawn the best chance of avoiding Large Patch this season, now is the time to act.
