For Richmond, the best choice of grass seed is almost always going to be a blend of turf-type tall fescue. That is because Richmond is in a "transition zone," where summers are hot and humid but winters are cold enough that cool-season grasses still perform well.

Turf-type tall fescue is one of the best-adapted lawn grasses for most of the state of Virginia due to its deep roots, drought tolerance, and overall performance.

The best time to seed your lawn in Richmond is just around the corner: between late August through early October, after the summer heat has died down and sown with enough time to grow lush come spring.
