Even though air temperatures are averaging in the high 60s this week, most lawns are still dormant.

Dormancy is driven by soil temperature, not short-term warm spells. Right now, soil temperatures remain cold, which means turfgrass is not actively growing or repairing itself.

Foot traffic, mowing, and heavy equipment during dormancy can cause unnecessary stress. Compaction and crown damage are more likely, and recovery will be slower once growth resumes.

Limiting traffic and waiting for consistent soil warming helps protect turf health heading into spring.
