Turf Tuesday | What Happens Between Visits Matters

This photo was taken on August 21st in Richmond’s West End—and this lawn is looking about as good as you could ask for this time of year.

After the heat, lack of rainfall, and disease pressure we’ve experienced this summer, maintaining tall fescue through late August takes more than a good lawn care program.

Some of the most important factors happen between our visits.

This property is a great example. The homeowner is meticulous about proper watering and mowing practices, and the results speak for themselves.

Proper irrigation, mowing tall, avoiding unnecessary mowing during periods of extreme stress, and protecting turf from summer disease can make a tremendous difference in how tall fescue handles a Richmond summer.

We’re fortunate to see a lot of great-looking lawns as we head toward the end of summer, but every property is different. Sun exposure, soil conditions, irrigation, mowing practices, and disease pressure can all have a major impact on how a lawn performs.

Our job is to provide the treatments, expertise, and guidance that give your lawn the best opportunity to succeed. What happens between those visits matters too.

Great lawn care really is a partnership—and this lawn is a pretty good example of what can happen when everything comes together.

Turf Tuesday | The Details Make the Difference

We have a pretty strong opinion about aeration and overseeding at Turf Professors:

If we can't do it right, we're not going to do it at all.

Successful overseeding depends on seed-to-soil contact, and an aerator alone simply can't properly prepare every part of a lawn. Edges, corners, thin areas, and bare spots often need additional attention by hand.

That's exactly what you're seeing here. One of our lawn care technicians is using a garden weasel to loosen the soil and work seed into the edge of a driveway where the area needs some extra attention.

You can run an aerator over a bare spot a couple of times and throw seed on top, but that doesn't mean you've evenly incorporated that seed into the soil or given it the best opportunity to germinate.

That's why you'll find multiple custom-modified garden weasels on every single Turf Professors aeration trailer. We even modify them with long handles so our crews can comfortably and effectively use them throughout the day.

Is that overkill for a garden weasel? Maybe.

But our philosophy is simple: we're not going to charge our customers a premium price, send an inexperienced seasonal crew onto their property with an aerator and a bag of seed, and call that professional aeration and overseeding.

The big equipment is important. But knowing when the big equipment isn't enough—and being willing to put in the extra work—is what separates a professional job from simply punching holes, throwing down seed, and moving on.

Professional aeration and overseeding comes down to the details. And the details matter.

Turf Tuesday | The Right Tool for the Job

Fall aeration and overseeding season is almost here! Pictured is Nate on our 4-wheel-drive Ventrac, which allows us to properly aerate steep hills and larger properties where traditional equipment isn't always the right choice.

Core aeration relieves soil compaction, improves the movement of air, water, and nutrients into the root zone, while creating thousands of openings for one of the most important parts of overseeding: seed-to-soil contact.

At Turf Professors, we know that one machine can't properly handle every lawn. We use small and large walk-behind aerators, stand-on Stinger aerators, and our Ventrac depending on the property.

For seeding, we use calibrated Andersons SR-2000 spreaders for precise, consistent seed distribution. We also use drop seeders along every edge of your property to put seed exactly where it belongs and keep it out of flower beds, driveways, and other areas where it doesn't. Our custom-modified garden weasels help work seed into the soil along edges and other hard-to-reach areas to maximize seed-to-soil contact.

More equipment? Absolutely. More time? Yep.

But proper aeration and overseeding isn't about getting on and off a lawn as quickly as possible. It's about having the right tools and taking the time to do the job right.

Turf Tuesday | Summer Reveals Great Lawns

This photo was taken last week, right in the middle of one of the toughest stretches of the summer.

A beautiful lawn doesn't happen by accident.

It's the result of countless good decisions made over time.

This year has challenged even the best lawns. Between the relentless heat and lack of rainfall, cool-season turf across Central Virginia has been under tremendous stress.

Yet lawns like this continue to stand out.

Healthy, mature turf, proper mowing practices, smart irrigation, quality products, and consistent maintenance all work together to produce results like these.

At Turf Professors, our goal isn't just to make your lawn look great in the spring. We want it looking exceptional when conditions are at their toughest—because that's when truly great lawns separate themselves.

Turf Tuesday | Patience Pays Off 🌧️

After battling intense heat and a lack of rainfall all season, today's downpour was a welcome sight. Here in Richmond's West End near Collegiate School, we picked up nearly 1.5 inches of rain this afternoon.

This photo was taken in the middle of the storm at one of our employee's homes. The front lawn was renovated about three years ago, and despite one of the toughest summers we've seen in years, it's still thriving.

Last year, the backyard was renovated and a new irrigation system was installed. While it still looks great for late July, it's been much more of a challenge this season and simply hasn't performed as well as the established front lawn.

That's one of the biggest advantages of using high-quality grass seed and giving it time to mature. As turf-type tall fescue becomes established, it develops a deeper root system, becomes denser, and is much better equipped to handle heat, drought, and disease.

One other thing made a difference: this lawn was only mowed when it actually needed it. During the hottest, driest stretches of the summer, it was left alone instead of adding unnecessary stress.

Great lawns aren't built in a single season. They're built over time with quality seed, smart maintenance, and a little patience.

Turf Tuesday | One Very Persistent Customer 🦆

Sometimes our technicians make a new friend while they're out on their routes.

Last week, one of our technicians pulled up to this beautiful West End lawn, stepped out of the spray truck, and was immediately greeted by a very curious hen mallard... who apparently decided she was joining him for the rest of the visit.

He tried making his way to the backyard to begin the application, but she wasn't having it. Everywhere he went, she waddled right behind him. After a few attempts, he decided the best course of action was to simply skip the property and come back a little later.

As it turns out, she's one of three escaped pet ducks that have become well-known around the neighborhood. Since she seemed determined to stick close by, our technician didn't want her wandering through a freshly treated lawn. The products we apply are labeled to allow people and pets back onto the lawn once the application has dried, but waiting a couple of hours was an easy decision.

Sure enough, when he returned later that afternoon, our feathered friend had moved on to her next adventure, and we were able to complete the application without disturbing her.

Besides... we can't really blame her for sticking around. If you're a duck out of water, there are certainly worse places to spend the afternoon than on a lush, healthy lawn like this.

Sometimes being a professional means knowing when not to spray. It's just one small example of the attention to detail and care we try to bring to every property we visit—even if that means working around one very determined duck.

Turf Tuesday | The Difference Is in the Diagnosis

One of our newest Turf Professors customers in Richmond's West End had a question that had gone unanswered for years.

Every year, their lawn received professional lawn treatments. Every fall, it was aerated and overseeded. Yet every summer, the same bare spot came right back.

After contacting their previous lawn care provider multiple times, they were repeatedly told the area was simply "winter grass" dying out during the summer.

During our consultation visit, Nate took a soil probe and found solid wood just beneath the surface. He then pulled up an older Google Street View image on his laptop and showed the homeowners that, just a few years earlier, a massive tree had stood exactly where the bare spot is today. Suddenly, years of failed overseeding attempts and recurring bare spots finally made sense.

The buried stump was less than an inch below the surface. Until it's removed, no lawn care program—regardless of who is providing it—is going to establish healthy, long-term turf in that location. Sometimes the problem isn't what you're putting on the lawn. It's what's hiding underneath it.

The homeowners were genuinely surprised. After years of trying to get answers, no one had ever taken the time to investigate why this area continued to fail.

They became Turf Professors customers that day.

This fall, after additional stump grinding is completed, we'll renovate the area correctly and finally give this section of lawn the opportunity to thrive.

At Turf Professors, we don't believe in making assumptions. We believe in asking questions, investigating the problem, and finding the right answer before recommending a solution.

That's the difference between simply treating a lawn and truly caring for one.

Happy Turf Tuesday

This week's featured lawn is a beautiful property in Windsor Farms. Not only is the turf looking great, but the stripes are absolutely incredible. Properties like this are always fun to showcase because they highlight what healthy turf can look like when proper cultural practices, irrigation, and lawn care all come together.

We're also happy to finally be seeing some rainfall across the Richmond area this week. While the rain is certainly welcome, the combination of increased moisture and summer temperatures means it's also the time of year when homeowners should start keeping an eye out for potential disease activity in their lawns.

One thing we've noticed recently is an increase in calls from customers concerned about possible fungus outbreaks. In many cases, however, what we're finding isn't disease at all—it's simply drought stress and dormancy from the extended dry conditions we've experienced this season.

So how can you tell the difference?

Fungus problems in tall fescue often appear as distinct patches that can spread over time. You may notice irregular brown areas, thinning turf, or lesions on individual grass blades. In some cases, fungal activity can seem to develop almost overnight when weather conditions are favorable.

Heat and drought stress tend to look different. More often, the turf gradually loses color, develops a dull gray-green appearance, and begins turning tan or brown in areas that aren't receiving enough moisture. These symptoms are especially common in sunny areas, on slopes, or in parts of the lawn with poor irrigation coverage.

As always, if something doesn't look right, don't hesitate to reach out. We'd much rather take a look and help identify the issue than have a customer guessing at what might be happening.

Enjoy the rain, and hopefully we'll continue to see conditions improve as we move through the rest of the summer.

Happy Turf Tuesday!

This week's featured lawn is a beautiful estate in Powhatan County, and believe it or not, just a few weeks ago this property was showing significant signs of drought stress.

Like many areas across Central Virginia, this lawn has been battling a lack of consistent rainfall. While we've received some scattered showers recently, rainfall totals have varied dramatically from one neighborhood to the next.

A few weeks ago, we received a call from this customer with concerns about yellow and brown streaking throughout portions of the lawn. Naturally, they wanted to know if the issue could have been related to a recent lawn application.

It's a fair question, and one we take seriously. Our spray technicians calibrate their equipment daily to ensure accurate product delivery. Every property is measured and mapped so we know exactly how much product should be applied based on the precise square footage of the lawn. We routinely verify our equipment's output and are very rarely off by more than 3% from our target application rates, which is well within industry tolerances.

Unfortunately, accurate measurements and routine calibration aren't as common in our industry as many homeowners might assume. That's one reason we place such a strong emphasis on training, quality control, and accountability.

Every property we service is physically measured using GPS measurement wheels. We're not sitting behind a computer screen estimating square footage or relying on aerial imagery. We want to know exactly how much turf we're treating because accurate square footage is the foundation of every application we make.

Once we know the exact size of the lawn, we calculate exactly how much product should be applied and verify that our equipment is delivering that amount. There is a big difference between applying product and applying the correct amount of product to the correct area. That level of precision helps ensure customers receive the service they're paying for while also maintaining safe, effective, and environmentally responsible application practices.

After inspecting the property, we discovered the streaking was not related to any products we had applied. Instead, the affected areas were consistent with drought-stressed turf that had been further damaged during mowing. The lawn was already struggling from a lack of moisture, and the stress became much more visible after it was cut.

To get to the root of the problem, we evaluated multiple irrigation zones throughout the property and discovered that several areas were receiving far less water than expected. In some zones, watering times needed to be nearly tripled just to approach a half-inch of water per cycle.

Fast forward a couple of weeks, and these are the results.

An absolutely vibrant lawn that has bounced back beautifully.

One of the advantages of working with a local company is that when something doesn't look right, you can pick up the phone and talk directly with people who genuinely care about finding the answer. Sometimes the solution is simple. Sometimes it takes a little investigation. Either way, our goal is always the same: provide honest answers, solve problems quickly, and help our customers achieve the results their lawns deserve.

We're not perfect, but we'll always be transparent, responsive, and willing to go the extra mile for our customers.
