Two lots on the same road can dig completely differently.

Much of Central Kentucky sits on limestone, sometimes just a few feet down. Dense clay holds water and shifts as it wets and dries. And karst terrain can hide sinkholes and voids under a flat-looking yard.

Each one changes how a site should be excavated, graded, and drained.

Winter will be here before you know it and one habit shortens the life of your concrete faster than anything else: de-icing salt.

Rock salt and chlorides drive freeze-thaw damage right at the surface, which is how driveways and sidewalks end up flaking and pitted. New concrete is especially vulnerable through its first winter.

What helps: use sand for traction instead of salt, keep water draining away from slabs, and seal flatwork before the cold sets in.
