October is that sweet spot where we’re still growing, still harvesting, and also getting ready for what’s next.

A few gentle reminders for this month:
• Harvest what’s ready
• Save ripe seeds

Kitchen scraps 🍎🍌🥚= garden gold.

Before anything makes it to my outdoor compost, it lives right here in the kitchen… in an old plastic pretzel 🥨container. Just a simple little scrap collector for veggie peels, fruit scraps, coffee grounds, and eggshells because composting doesn’t have to be fancy to be effective. If you’ve got a container with a lid, you can start.

To keep it clean + low-odor:
- Keep a lid on it and empty it every 1–3 days
- Add a little “dry” material if it gets wet (shredded paper, a napkin, dry leaves)
- Skip meat, dairy, and greasy foods (those are the stink starters)

Small habit, big payoff 🤗 your future soil will thank you.

🌿 Plant Tip Tuesday: Compost is plant food, not plant soil.

If you’re growing houseplants inside and food outside, compost can be your quiet little superpower. It brings life back into tired soil, helps it hold moisture the right way, and feeds your plants slowly over time.

Here’s the simple way to use it (without stressing your plants):

1) Top-dress it.
Sprinkle a thin layer (about 1/2 inch) on top of the soil, keeping it a little away from the stem. Then water it in gently.

2) Mix it in when you plant or refresh.
For pots and raised beds, aim for compost to be about 20–30% of your mix. Too much compost can hold water too long for some plants, so a little goes a long way.

Soft reminder: compost is an amendment. It’s not meant to replace potting mix all by itself.

Want to start composting but don’t want it to feel complicated? Start small:
• “Greens” = kitchen scraps (fruit/veg peels, coffee grounds)
• “Browns” = dry leaves, shredded paper/cardboard
• Keep it as damp as a wrung-out sponge
• Turn it when you remember

A pot that’s too big holds extra wet soil, and that can stress roots.

Quick check:
• New pot should be 1–2 inches wider than the old one
• Keep the same depth unless roots are circling hard
• Always use fresh soil + drainage

New plant baby alert 🤍🌿

Monstera deliciosa ‘Thai Constellation’ is officially home, and I’m still in awe of her. That soft, speckled variegation feels like little stars across every leaf.

I looked at the debris and thought: I’ve got this. Because honestly? A strong, independent woman + a good pair of scissors can go a long way. I spent some time trimming, clearing, and making space for fresh air and new growth. It’s not perfect, but it’s lighter and so am I.

Tell me why I stood there staring at my Pink Princess like it was about to take an exam I didn’t study for 😅✂️ I had the scissors in my hand and still needed a whole pep talk. Even the most experienced plant parents get a little nervous cutting a favorite plant. Watch me talk myself into it…then make the cut.

Pink Princess propagation steps + tips:

1) The cut
• Choose a healthy stem with at least 1 node (that bump is where roots come from). A leaf alone won’t root.
• Use sharp, clean shears and cut just below the node.
• Optional: let the cut end callus 30–60 minutes to help prevent rot.

2) Rooting in water
• Keep the node under water and the leaves out of the water.
• Bright, indirect light is your best friend.
• Change the water weekly (or sooner if it gets cloudy).

3) Moving to soil
• Pot up once roots are a few inches long and starting to branch.
• Use a small pot with drainage and an airy mix (soil + perlite + orchid bark).
• Keep it lightly moist for the first 1–2 weeks while it adjusts from water roots to soil roots.
• Bright indirect light helps keep that pink variegation happy (low light = more green).

That’s where spider mites, thrips, and aphids like to start.

Quick routine:
• Flip a few leaves over once a week
• If you see tiny dots/webbing or sticky spots, isolate the plant ASAP
