What's keeping you up at night?

Join our next Coaching Circle for Women Leaders Friday, Sept 18, from 5-6 p.m. In our last meeting, we discussed how to work with our gremlins (aka negative self-talk). This negative self-talk can come from our childhood or traumatic experiences we have had in adulthood. Typically, negative self-talk is not true and does not help us. In fact it can impede us in reaching our goals.

Message me for more details. And take care, Joan

You and Your Feelings Matter

During the pandemic, some have hesitated to tell me honestly how they feel. Their hesitation? Others are suffering much more. This brought me back to a childhood moment when I was sick in bed complaining to my mother. She, an ardent Catholic, responded, “Stop complaining, don’t you know the Pope is dying?”

Many of us received these messages impressed on us like an iron. I don’t matter; my feelings are insignificant. What I know now is this is not true. You and your feelings matter greatly and don’t have to be justified against others’ suffering.

Even more important, if you deal with your feelings, you are that much more available to your own unique and amazing life, and to those around you.

You do matter.

The Pandemic is a Portal. Was struck by Aranhati Roy’s article about the pandemic from the London Financial Times, April 3 (with thanks to Susan Tiberghien). “Historically, pandemics have forced humans to break with the past and imagine the world anew. This one is no different. It’s a portal, a gateway between one world and the next. We can choose to walk through it, dragging the carcasses of our prejudice and hatred, our avarice, our data banks and dead ideas, our dead rivers and smoky skies behind us. Or we can walk through lightly, with little luggage, ready to imagine another world. And ready to fight for it.”
How do you want to walk to the future? What are you imagining for it?

This morning I woke up to swollen knees, a product of all the walking I have been doing since the quarantine (translation: a lot of walking). This calls for rest and pacing myself. While this doesn’t come easily to me, my dog Ruby does this naturally. Challenges can be harder when we don't know when they will end. How are you pacing yourself through the pandemic?

As a coach, I have helped many clients lead in crises such as natural disasters, government shutdowns, and war zones. The coronavirus has me experiencing the crisis myself. At 65 years of age, I also must protect my own health. So here are the questions I have for myself and for you:

How are you caring for yourself?

What fears and anxieties (from past trauma) has this brought up for you?

What questions have you been asking your clients during this crisis?

How can you best care for your clients now?

I would love to hear from you!#traumahealing #coaching #professionalDevelopment

Nine years ago my friend Meryl (Joy) Rowley lost her son Kyle to a driver who was distracted while texting. While that trauma would be enough for most, Meryl decided she didn’t want another person to lose their child to a distracted driver. With other survivors, she spent 5 years lobbying Richmond to make a change.
Due to her efforts, handheld devices will now be outlawed in VA while driving a motor vehicle. Well done, my friend.

With much to be worried about these days, Mr. Rogers’ words encourage me to look for the helpers; as my friend says, the “light workers”.

People who are trying to make things better; who are holding the vision of what is right vs. what is wrong.

"As human beings, our job in life is to help people realize how rare and valuable each one of us really is, that each of us has something that no one else has- or ever will have- something inside that is unique to all time. It's our job to encourage each other to discover that uniqueness and to provide ways of developing its expression." - Mr. Rogers

Who or what encourages you? 👇Let me know in the comments.

Hi everyone! I'm excited to share more about myself with you. I own a small business specializing in leadership development training and coaching. I am lucky to work with people from all over the world, especially those in Foreign Affairs agencies.

I believe leadership development is essentially self-development. If you want to have the life you have dreamed of, leadership development can start you on that path.

My training is energizing, fun and effective. You will gain important concepts, skills and techniques that can be immediately applied. My workshops are relevant and practical.

My coaching helps you become more fulfilled and balanced. I help you process whatever is keeping you stuck or holding you back from reaching your goals,

You may want to decipher a 360 assessment; implement concepts you learned in training; or tackle home and work challenges. My style is warm, accessible, and based on 17 years of successful experience.

Your career is a dynamic that needs to be consciously managed. I teach career development skills and can administer the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator®, Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument and Tom Rath’s StrengthFinders®.
