My dog is on flea prevention. Why are fleas still on them?

This is a question many homeowners have.

A dog can be on flea prevention, get a bath, and still seem like it is covered in fleas shortly afterward. That does not always mean the flea prevention is failing.

The other day, I received a call about yellow jackets.

Imagine stepping outside onto your front porch, accidentally bumping into an old purse sitting nearby, and suddenly being attacked by a swarm of yellow jackets. Now imagine being allergic to them.

That was the situation this customer found herself in.

She reached out on Facebook looking for a pest control company that could help. Unfortunately, she was going through some financial difficulties and couldn't afford much. She told me she had contacted other companies but wasn't able to get the help she needed.

So I told her, pay whatever you can—even if that means nothing. I’ll come take care of it.

Because sometimes, helping someone is bigger than making a sale.

As you can see in the photos and video, the yellow jackets had built their nest inside an old purse. The nest was safely removed, the yellow jacket activity was eliminated, and most importantly, this customer no longer has to worry about accidentally disturbing the nest and being put in a dangerous situation.

You'll also see the difference in size between the queen and a worker yellow jacket. The queen is noticeably larger and plays an important role in establishing and maintaining the colony.

Carpenter ants are often associated with wood, but they are not actually eating it like termites do.

Instead, carpenter ants excavate wood to create tunnels and galleries for their nests. They are especially likely to take advantage of areas where moisture has weakened or damaged the wood.

Common conditions that can attract carpenter ants include:

• Leaky roofs and gutters
• Plumbing leaks
• Damp crawl spaces
• Moisture around windows and doors
• Damp soil or mulch against the home
• Wood piles, stumps, and other decaying wood

Moisture is an important part of the equation. Carpenter ants are often looking for wood that has already been compromised by water or decay.

Another Yellow Jacket Nest Safely Removed!

Today we removed another active yellow jacket nest before it became a bigger problem for the homeowner.

Yellow jackets can become very aggressive when their nest is disturbed, and late summer is when colonies are often at their largest. They commonly build nests:

🪰 BUG OF THE WEEK: Did You Know House Flies Taste With Their Feet?

You've probably seen a house fly land on your food... but did you know it isn't just walking around?

House flies have taste receptors on their feet!

Every time a fly lands on a surface, it's actually "sampling" it to decide if it's worth eating. Instead of tasting with their mouth first like we do, they use tiny sensory organs on their feet to detect chemicals in the food.

🤔 How it works:
- A fly lands on a surface.
-Taste receptors on its feet detect chemicals.
-If it likes what it "tastes," it begins feeding.
-Since flies can't chew, they liquefy food before drinking it through their sponge-like mouthparts.

Nature is full of incredible adaptations, and this is one of the weirdest!
