Ever wonder what your roof looks like naked?

Well… here you go.

We stripped this one all the way down to the decking before dressing it back up properly with RhinoRoof® synthetic underlayment and Owens Corning Duration® shingles in Williamsburg Gray.

And yes, there’s a method to that shingle pattern. Proper shingle staggering keeps the joints from lining up vertically, helping water shed correctly while giving the finished roof that clean, uniform look. Roofing may look like “just rows of shingles,” but the little details underneath are what make the whole system work.

This repair is a great example of why proper roof-to-wall flashing matters. From the outside, the visible damage looked fairly minimal, but once the siding was opened up, the hidden rot told a different story.

In this area, the absence of proper kick-out flashing allowed water to run behind the siding over time instead of being directed safely into the gutter. That slow, repeated water intrusion caused the wood behind the exterior finish to deteriorate.

These are the kinds of issues that often go unnoticed until the damage has already spread. A small piece of correctly installed flashing can make a huge difference in protecting your siding, framing, and interior walls.

Over time, roofing nails can begin to back out of the decking due to:
• Natural expansion and contraction from temperature changes
• Improper original installation
• Aging roof systems and ventilation issues
• Deck movement over time

As the nail lifts, it pushes the shingle upward and creates a direct path for water intrusion. In the photo below, you can see a popped nail beginning to work its way through the shingle surface — a small issue that can eventually turn into a leak if left untreated.

The good news: nail pops are usually repairable when caught early. Regular roof inspections can help identify these problem areas before interior damage occurs.

One detail that separates a quality roof install from a rushed one? Proper shingle staggering.

Architectural shingles are designed to be installed in a specific staggered pattern, not lined up in straight vertical seams. When installed correctly, the stagger:
- Helps shed water properly
- Reduces the chance of water intrusion
- Improves wind resistance
- Creates a cleaner dimensional appearance
