“OUR COATING WILL NEVER CHIP, PEEL, FADE OR CRACK.”
Sound familiar?
Our team has spent more than a decade in the concrete-coatings industry, and we’ve heard just about every version of these claims.
Here’s the honest answer:
Polyurea and epoxy can both be excellent products. Neither one is automatically better simply because of the name on the bucket.
When someone says a coating is “4X stronger,” ask: Stronger how, and measured how?
Tensile strength? Hardness? Abrasion resistance? Impact resistance? Flexibility? Adhesion?
Those are completely different measurements. Without naming the products, the test and the result, “4X stronger” is a marketing line, not a useful comparison.
EPOXY IS NOT OUTDATED.
Quality professional epoxies can provide:
* Excellent adhesion to properly prepared concrete
* High-build coverage
* Strong compressive and impact performance
* Good chemical and abrasion resistance
* More working time for larger or more detailed installations
There’s a reason epoxy systems are still used in demanding commercial and industrial environments.
POLYUREA AND POLYASPARTIC AREN’T MAGIC, BUT THEY’RE ALSO GREAT PRODUCTS.
Depending on the formulation, they can provide:
* Faster curing and return to service
* Greater flexibility
* Strong wear and chemical resistance
* The ability to cure in cooler conditions
* Excellent UV and color stability when the correct aliphatic polyaspartic topcoat is used
But not every polyurea is UV-stable, and a faster cure gives installers less time to work, which makes experience and correct installation even more important.
And a “one-day installation” describes the schedule, not the quality.
Some floors are perfect candidates for a properly installed one-day system. Other floors need additional time for coating removal, crack and spall repair, contamination treatment or moisture mitigation. We won’t rush a floor simply to fit a slogan.
Here in Minnesota and South Dakota, our floors deal with snow, wet vehicles, road salts, temperature swings and freeze-thaw conditions. Flexibility can be beneficial, but it does not make any coating crack-proof or eliminate the need to repair and properly treat the concrete.
The right answer might be an epoxy base with a polyaspartic topcoat. It might be a polyurea and polyaspartic system. It might be something else entirely.
The foundation of every successful system is the same:
Quality products, proper repairs and professional surface preparation.
The concrete must be sound, contaminants and failing coatings must be removed, and the surface must be mechanically prepared to the correct profile, typically through diamond grinding or shot blasting. No coating chemistry can overcome poor preparation.
The bottom line?
A high-quality epoxy system installed correctly can be an outstanding floor. A high-quality polyurea system installed correctly can be an outstanding floor.
The condition of the concrete, the environment, the intended use, the complete coating system and the quality of the installation matter far more than a catchy comparison.
