Minnesota Fall Plant Care: Get Your Landscape Ready for Winter! ❄️

Fall is one of the most important times of year to give your plants and landscape a little extra attention. A few simple steps now can help your trees, shrubs, perennials, and lawn come back healthier next spring!
Here are a few things to tackle before winter settles in:

🌱 Keep watering – Give trees and shrubs a deep watering before the ground freezes, especially newly planted or young plants.

🍁 Clean up leaves – A layer of leaves can smother your lawn and create problems, but leaves can also provide valuable nutrients when used properly. Consider mulching them into your lawn or adding them to garden beds.

🌳 Protect young trees & shrubs – Newly planted plants can benefit from extra protection against Minnesota’s cold temperatures, wind, and winter wildlife. Consider adding a white plastic tree guard to protect tree's from wildlife and frost cracking.

🌿 Add mulch – A 2–3 inch layer of mulch around trees and garden beds can help insulate roots and protect plants from dramatic temperature swings. Just keep mulch away from the trunk!

✂️ Be careful with pruning – Not every plant should be cut back in the fall. Some benefit from waiting until late winter or spring, so make sure you know what your plants need before reaching for the pruners.

🌾 Don’t forget your perennials – Some plants should be cut back in fall, while others are better left standing through winter for protection, wildlife habitat, and winter interest.

A little preparation now can make a big difference when spring arrives in Minnesota. 🌷
