Controlling bush honeysuckle, an invasive species that outcompetes native plants in Illinois forests, is effectively managed using the cut stump method.

To implement this, cut honeysuckle stems 2–6 inches above the ground, ensuring a flat, fresh stump surface. Within 5–10 minutes, apply a herbicide labeled for woody plants to the entire cut surface, focusing on the outer cambium layer to prevent regrowth. If cut but not treated with herbicide, as shown in the attached photo, the plant can resprout vigorously from the remaining stump or root system. Its robust root network stores energy, allowing it to produce new shoots from the cut stump or lateral roots shortly after cutting, often within weeks. Adding a dye to the herbicide helps track treated stumps.

Monitor for resprouts in subsequent seasons. Pair this method with native plantings to restore healthy forest ecosystems. Contact Prairie State Forestry for our invasive species control services!

🌳 Planning to log your land? Choose Prairie State Forestry as your trusted consulting forester!

Our sustainable practices, like crop tree release, promote healthy forests for future generations to harvest while boosting your timber profits! Unlike high grading, a harmful practice that removes only the best trees and leaves low-quality ones, our approach ensures long-term forest health and productivity. High grading degrades forest value, reduces biodiversity, and limits future harvests.

At Prairie State Forestry we protect your land’s health, secure fair prices, and conduct a full timber inventory. Contact us today to maximize your profits and ensure a thriving legacy for generations!

Why Invasive Species Hurt Our Forests:
Bush honeysuckle, autumn olive, and multi-flora rose are silent forest killers. Here’s why we fight them:

Hardwood Regeneration: These invasives outcompete native hardwood seedlings (oak, hickory, walnut) for light, water, and nutrients, preventing future timber from regenerating.

Native Browse & Mast for Wildlife: They crowd out native plants that provide critical food (acorns, berries) and habitat for deer, turkey, and songbirds. Invasives offer low-quality browse replacing natives that wildlife depend on.

Ecosystem Collapse: They form impenetrable thickets, reduce plant diversity, and alter soil chemistry, leaving forests weaker and less resilient.

Prairie State Forestry uses targeted removal to revive native forests and support wildlife. Contact Prairie State Forestry to restore balance!
