While you're sitting in your deer stand this October, stop scrolling on your phone and do some tree inventory. There's one native tree worth paying especially close attention to, the White Oak.

White oak (Quercus alba) is one of the most valuable native trees in Illinois woodlands, not only from a timber standpoint, but as a wildlife resource.

Whitetail deer, wild turkey, squirrels and numberous other wildlife species love to munch on the acorns this valuable timber species produces. Mature White Oaks also provide cavities, cover and habitat for countless woodland organisms.

But having mature Oaks today doesn't necessarily mean you'll have them 40 years from now. Without adequate sunlight reaching the forest floor and successful Oak regeneration, future stands gradually shift toward more shade-tolerant species.
That's one reason proper forest management isn't just about the trees standing today. It's about making sure the next generation of desirable trees is there to replace them.

Next time you're in the woods, check out how many young Oak seedlings you can find beneath your mature trees.

Wishing the happiest of Opening Days to all who celebrate!!!

Opening day is also when months, and sometimes years, of habitat work finally start showing itself. Timber stand improvement, invasive species control, better bedding cover, native plant diversity, and healthy mast-producing trees all contribute to how deer use a property.

This fall, take a little extra time in the stand to look around your property. What trees are producing? Where is the thick cover? Are native plants regenerating beneath the canopy? Where are deer naturally traveling?

Those observations can tell you a lot about what your property needs next.

Considering logging your property? Not all timber harvests improve a forest.

One of the biggest mistakes a landowner can make is allowing their woods to be high graded.

High grading is the practice of harvesting only the most valuable trees, often the largest, healthiest, and highest quality oaks, walnuts, or other desirable hardwoods, while leaving behind lower quality trees.

While it may provide a larger check today, it can have lasting consequences for the future of your forest.

When the all of the best trees are removed:

The forest's genetics decline. The healthiest, most vigorous trees, the ones producing the highest quality seed, are gone, leaving poorer quality trees to regenerate the next generation of forest, significantly decreasing the value.

The canopy opens up. Increased sunlight reaches the forest floor, creating ideal conditions for invasive species like bush honeysuckle, autumn olive, multiflora rose, and garlic mustard to spread rapidly.

Lower quality trees dominate. Instead of encouraging a healthy mix of desirable hardwoods, the remaining trees often become overcrowded, compete for resources, and limit the development of future crop trees.

Wildlife habitat suffers. Mature oaks and other mast producing trees are some of the most valuable food sources for deer, turkey, squirrels, and countless other wildlife species. Removing too many of these trees means your property no longer has the capacity to support these species.

A well managed timber harvest should do more than generate income, it should leave your woods healthier than before. Good forestry is about balancing timber value, wildlife habitat, and the long term future of the forest.

Not every tree belongs in a healthy forest.

Landowners often have a hard time okaying the removal of perfectly healthy trees in their timber. But, that is exactly what Timber Stand Improvement (TSI) is all about. A crowded forest forces trees to compete for sunlight, water, and nutrients. Over time, this weakens the stand and creates ideal conditions for invasive species to take over.

Removing lower-quality, undesirable trees gives the best trees room to thrive. The result is a healthier, more resilient woodland with stronger oaks and hickories, better wildlife habitat, increased native plant diversity, and a forest that will continue improving and hold its value for future generations.

Healthy forests don't happen by accident, they're actively managed.

We are wrapping up native plantings on several of our clients' properties, and what better time to remember that June is National Pollinator Month.

This time of year serves as a great reminder of the important role pollinators play in the health of our forests, fields, and wildlife habitats. At Prairie State Forestry, we believe that full-cycle land management goes beyond simply removing invasive species or improving timber quality.
