As of September 1, 2026, the NEC exception for listed outdoor air-conditioning and heat pump equipment has expired. New outdoor HVAC installations now require GFCI protection at the outdoor disconnect.

In plain language, GFCI protection helps reduce the risk of electric shock by shutting off power when it detects an unintended path to ground. An especially important safeguard for outdoor equipment exposed to moisture.

Before work begins, ask your installer:
• Will the outdoor disconnect have GFCI protection?
