We're excited to welcome Steven Peeples to our team as Division Manager for Special Projects in our Seattle office. Steven brings more than 25 years of leadership experience in real estate development, construction management, and operations across multifamily, mixed-use, hospitality, and commercial projects throughout the Pacific Northwest. His background spans both owner/developer and general contractor perspectives, giving him a well-rounded command of preconstruction, budgeting, scheduling, entitlement strategy, and full-cycle project ex*****on. Known for building collaborative, high-performing teams and delivering strong outcomes for clients and stakeholders, Steven's proactive approach and deep industry relationships make him a valuable addition to Deacon. Deacon's Community Partnership Managers, Patti, Alexia, and Michael, recently visited the Construction Trades class through the Seattle Skills Center at Rainier Beach High School to talk about careers in the construction industry and share information about Deacon's summer internship program alongside teacher John.

The talent and pride these students showed in their work was inspiring. Programs like this do more than teach technical skills. They create opportunities, build confidence, and help students see new possibilities for their future. We are proud to support schools creating these experiences and look forward to continuing to invest in the next generation of builders and leaders.

Across our jobsites and offices last week, Deacon staff worked through hazard recognition, hierarchy of controls, fall protection, heat awareness, and the evolving conversation around head protection. Stand-downs led by our Safety Managers gave everyone time to refresh the tools that matter most: JHAs, pre-task plans, and looking out for one another.

The themes of Construction Safety Week are more than a weekly agenda. They're a reminder that the people next to us are someone's family, and that the work we do to protect each other never really ends.

We're grateful for every team member who showed up, asked questions, and shared experience.

Our Portland Special Projects team recently completed the Harvest Grill renovation at the Rose Villa retirement community, transforming an existing 996 sf restaurant into an updated dining and kitchen space designed to better serve residents and staff. The project included a new storefront, upgraded cookline and kitchen equipment, a grab-and-go area, new finishes, and FF&E throughout the space. Deacon’s self-perform team also completed demolition, finish carpentry, cabinet installation, accent wall trim, and select stainless-steel components. Through close coordination with the owner and design team, the project was completed on schedule and delivered with a satisfied client at closeout.

Our GC team wrapped up the Benson High School guardrail remediation project, for Portland Public Schools, which improved safety at stairwells and balcony areas throughout the facility. Work included removal of existing guardrails and metal infill panels, along with fabrication and installation of new metal panels designed to meet updated safety requirements.

Through phased construction and coordination with school operations, the project was completed on a tight timeline while minimizing disruption within the active campus environment.

Last weekend, several Deacon employees took part in the Seattle North Spartan race, a 5k sprint race, which included approximately 20 obstacles. The course was set at the Meadow Wood Equestrian Center and featured a mix of flat, fast terrain with forested trails and river-adjacent paths, making it both approachable and challenging. From rope climbs and wall obstacles to carries and crawls, the course tested both endurance and strength.

Overall, it was a great showing from the team and a fun way to represent Deacon outside of the office. Events like this are a great reminder of the teamwork, determination, and grit that our employees bring to everything they do.

Our Sacramento Special Projects team is excited to announce the completion of Fogo de Chão at Santana Row in San Jose, CA. This 10,089 sf restaurant remodel included demolition of existing interiors, upgraded bar and restroom areas, new interior and exterior finishes, and full MEP system updates. We also enclosed the patio to create additional interior dining space, enhancing both capacity and the overall guest experience. We are excited for their guests to experience a refreshed, elevated dining experience in one of the Bay Area’s premier destinations!

Deacon Construction is proud to be celebrating our 45th anniversary this year. Looking back there have been many key milestones along the way.

S.D. Deacon Corp. was founded on July 9, 1981, in Portland, OR. Compared to today, the company's beginnings were humble: our first office was a borrowed eight-by-ten-foot room in a small office building in southwest Portland.

From the outset, Deacon developed a strong focus on retail construction projects. While we’ve since expanded into most types of commercial and multifamily work, retail continues to represent roughly half of our work volume. Today, our firm is recognized as the largest retail contractor on the West Coast and the fifth largest in the nation.

Important Milestones:

1981: The company was founded and won its first successful bid, a project for Columbia Distributing, along with its first job trailer.

1982: Deacon hired its first full-time office employee, Richard Smith, who joined as a Project Engineer and went on to become President and CFO.

1984: Deacon opened its first California office in Sacramento.

1986: The company hit a major financial milestone, surpassing $10 million in annual revenue for the first time.

1990: A new office was opened in Seattle, WA, expanding Deacon's footprint into a third state.

1991: The Special Projects Division was launched, expanding Deacon's market reach.

2001: Deacon expanded into Southern California, opening an office now located in Irvine.

2004: A Repair and Restoration division was established to focus on specialized work.

2006: Deacon Development was formed to pursue real estate development and investments.

2015: All divisions and groups were rebranded under a single new logo and name: Deacon Construction, LLC.

2021: Andrew Naegeli was announced as the new CEO, succeeding founder Steve Deacon.

2025: Deacon stakes its claim in Idaho, opening an office in Boise with John Hamilton rejoining the firm as Regional Manager.
