Just wanted to share this because we’ve run into it a few too many times this year.
When hiring a contractor, always, always, ALWAYS do your homework. The cheapest price may look good up front, but that isn’t always what matters. You’re paying for the the quality, the materials, and someone who is going to stand behind what they build.
This particular situation is a perfect example. We found brackets being held with only one or two screws, or just not screwed in at all, improper fastening where lag screws would have been superior, nothing was level, and a gate that doesn’t function properly.
We’re not posting this to bash another contractor. We’re posting it as a reminder to know who you’re hiring. Look at their previous work, check their reviews, ask questions, and make sure they’re established and willing to stand behind their work.
And whenever possible, stay local. A local contractor has a reputation in the community to protect, and is much easier to get ahold of when something goes wrong. Unfortunately, we’ve seen out-of-town companies come in, get the job, and disappear when problems start showing up.
We understand everyone has a budget, and we’re not saying you have to hire the most expensive contractor. Just don’t let price be the only thing you consider. Sometimes saving a little money up front can cost you much more in the long run.
Our name is on every fence we build. We take pride in doing things right the first time because we know we’ll still be here when the job is finished. And we know there is a pretty good chance we will interact with that customer again in the future.
This is not a post saying “hire us because we’re better”, this is simply to address a problem that we see way too often! Do your homework, know who you’re hiring, and make sure the job is done right.
