Lots of folks have been asking me recently if it was too late to plant sunflowers this year. The answer to that question is two fold; first check and see how many days your particular seed has to maturation, and secondly are the seeds day length neutral. The hours of daylight are on the decline and regardless of the temperature unless the seed are day length neutral you won’t have the sunflowers you are hoping for.

Sunflowers can germinate in temperature as low as 41 degrees and may actually survive as a plant in a temperature as low as 28 degrees. So you would want to have a seed that will mature before we have a hard frost. Our first frost date in Anson county is Oct 20-26th according to NC State.

That being said I have sown a large cutting of sunflowers to pop for Sprouting Acres event October 10th event “Autumn at the Acres! 🤞🏻

This beautiful bloom is called Tithtonia or a Mexican sunflower. It reseeds itself yearly and blossoms towards the end of summer as other blooms start to fade. It is also a great favorite of pollinators. I discovered it quite by accident and have not seen others use it but I love it! In fact I wish all my accidents had such a fine result ….

According to weather forecast 65 degrees in the morning! Break out the mittens! It will feel glorious. As the days shorten and the daylight hours shift I find myself choosing colors with a fall like look.
