🥶 Negative temps all week = septic systems need a little extra respect.

Here’s how to keep yours safe (and avoid the “why is my toilet mad at me?” moment):

1. Don’t drive or park over your tank or drainfield
Frozen ground + heavy weight = cracked lids, crushed lines, compacted soil. Expensive stuff.
2. Leave snow cover over the septic area
Snow acts like insulation. Avoid scraping the area down to bare ground unless you need access—then clear gently.
3. Use water smarter (especially mornings + evenings)
In extreme cold, spread out laundry, showers, and dishes. Avoid big “water dumps” all at once.
4. Avoid hot water marathons
A giant load of super-hot water can shock cold pipes and contribute to freezing/backup issues. Moderate + spaced out wins.
5. Keep your risers/lids and cleanout marked
Flags/stakes help you (and the plow guy) find them without breaking anything when everything’s buried.
6. Don’t open the tank “just to check”
You release heat and can help things freeze faster. If something seems off, call a pro.

🚩 Warning signs to watch for: slow drains, gurgling toilets, sewage smell, or wet spots over the tank/field (even in winter).

If you’re seeing any of that this week, call Eccard Excavating before it turns into a full-blown emergency. 740-407-9150

Snowmageddon 2026 is coming!! Before the snow piles up, here are the most important things you can do right now to protect your septic system:

1) Mark your lids + risers
Flag/stake your septic tank lids and risers so plows, shovels, and snowblowers don’t crack them—or bury them until spring.

2) Keep heavy weight OFF the system
Do not drive or park over your septic tank or drainfield. Frozen ground + heavy weight can crush components and compact the soil.

3) Don’t pile snow on the drainfield
Avoid stacking big snow piles on your drainfield. When it melts, that extra water can oversaturate the soil and cause slow drains or backups.

4) Use water smart (especially after the storm)
Space out laundry/showers/dishwasher. Don’t do a massive “catch-up” water dump after being snowed in.

5) Leave the snow cover over your septic area
Snow is insulation. Don’t scrape down to bare ground over the tank/field unless you need access—then clear gently.

6) Biggest winter DON’T
No wipes (even “flushable”). No grease/fats down the drain. Winter is when those mistakes turn into emergency calls.

Red flags = call Eccard Excavating:
🚩 gurgling drains • slow drains throughout the house • sewage smell • septic alarm • any backup

If your system starts acting up during/after the storm, don’t wait—problems get bigger (and messier) fast.
