⚠️ WEATHER ALERT: High Wind Storm Hitting Pittsburgh Tomorrow! ⚠️

Attention, Yinzer Nation! Make sure you are prepared. A significant weather system is moving into the Pittsburgh area tomorrow, March 7-8, bringing the potential for severe high winds.

While we might see some warm temperatures early on, the main event will be strong wind gusts that could cause power outages, downed tree limbs, and property damage throughout Allegheny County and surrounding areas. Now is the time to secure your property before the winds pick up.
Here is your essential checklist of tips, tricks, and hacks to get your home and yard ready today.

🏡 PROPERTY PREP CHECKLIST: High Wind Edition
1. Secure the Yard (Most Critical!)
Anything not bolted down can become a dangerous projectile in high winds.
• Patio Furniture: Bring lightweight chairs, tables, and cushions inside a garage, shed, or basement.
• Grills: Move your grill to a sheltered area or tie it down securely. Hack: Top-heavy grills tip easily. If you can’t move it, use bungee cords to anchor it to a sturdy deck post.
• Toys & Bins: Collect children’s toys, sports equipment, potted plants, garbage cans, and recycling bins. Store them inside or use rope to tie them to a stationary object like a fence.
• Trampolines: These are notorious for taking flight. Either flip them over to reduce wind lift, stake them down with heavy-duty ground anchors, or weigh them down with multiple sandbags on the frame.

2. Check Your Home’s Exterior
• Gutters: Clear any debris from gutters and downspouts. High winds often come with rain, and blocked drainage can cause water damage.
• Doors & Windows: Close and securely lock all windows and exterior doors. Close interior doors as well to help reduce wind damage if an exterior window breaks.
• Garage Door: Your garage door is often the most vulnerable point. Ensure it is fully closed and locked. Hack: If you have a weaker garage door, parking your car snugly against the inside can provide a little extra bracing against external wind pressure.

3. Inspect Trees and Vehicles
• Tree Branches: Take a quick walk around your property. Look for loose, dead, or brittle branches that are close to your house or power lines. If you can safely remove small, loose limbs today, do so.
• Vehicles: Park cars in the garage if possible. If you must park outside, avoid parking directly under large trees or power lines.

4. Prepare for Power Outages
High winds frequently lead to downed lines.
• Charge Up: Charge your phones, laptops, and portable power banks now.
• Emergency Kit: Make sure you have flashlights (with fresh batteries), a battery-operated radio, and a basic first aid kit easily accessible.
• Hack for Freezer Food: Freeze several bottles of water or Ziploc bags full of water today. If the power goes out, move them from the freezer to the fridge to help keep your food cold longer. Keep fridge and freezer doors closed as much as possible.

🚗 STAY SAFE DURING THE STORM
• Stay Indoors: Avoid unnecessary travel. The safest place is inside, away from windows.
• Watch for Downed Lines: If you must go outside after the storm, NEVER approach or touch downed power lines. Assume they are live and dangerous. Report them immediately to your utility company and local authorities.

• Driving: If you are caught driving during high winds, keep both hands on the wheel, slow down, and allow extra space between you and high-profile vehicles like trucks or SUVs, which are more susceptible to gusts.
Stay safe, Pittsburgh! Please share this post with your neighbors to help everyone get prepared. We are stronger together. 🖤💛

PS don’t forget to set your clocks ahead tomorrow and plan to lose an hour of 💤 especially you and Beaver County Monaca Swickley Robinson, Pittsburgh squirrel Hill Oakland, East liberty Lawrenceville, cranberry Wexford, Warrendale, McCanless, North, Hills, Gibsonia and Mars, Pennsylvania.
