We get consistent questions about the Perma Lock roofs and we thought we would address some of them here:
1. What the noise level like inside while it's raining? ANSWER: when you're inside the home you shouldn't hear more noise than a traditional asphalt roof. That is because the shingle lays flat against the roof deck and with insulation in the home. Outside on a covered porch, you may notice a different sound. We actually find the sound quite nice.
2. How does it hold up against hail? ANSWER: The shingles have a Class 4 Impact Rating which is tested using a 2" ball. The Shingles are applied directly to the deck so the decking will absorb the hail. They do amazing with snow. The shingles hold up great in resorts and high elevations cabins with very high snowfall totals.
3. Isn't the roof getting extremely hot from the burning sun? ANSWER: Great question! So aluminum actually reflects heat, and our shingles can help with energy efficiency in the home. Even our black shingles are Energy Star Rated. Also, transversely, it doesn't get as cold as other metals.
4. What about lower pitched roofs like a 4:12? Would this still work and do the standard ice and water shield? ANSWER: Depends on location and complexity of the roof. Typically we do recommend an ice and water or peel and stick on anything 4:12 and under. Our shingles can be installed on a 3:12 and above.
5. I'm a designer and I specify a lot of products including roofing. Is it possible to get a sample and more info? ANSWER: Please give us a call or email [email protected] with your information and we will get samples sent your way.
6. What's the average lifespan of aluminum shingles and how much more can someone expect to spend? ANSWER: You can expect in most circumstances to pay double the cost of a traditional roof, so they are an investment. We offer a non-prorated lifetime transferable warranty to the original home owner. The warranty can be transferred if the home is sold, and it becomes a 50 year warranty. Typically in 10-15 years the roof will pay for itself with energy savings and not having to roof again.
7. What happens at really high winds like 166mph? ANSWER: Our product has been "officially" tested done at 165mph but also withstood higher winds and hurricanes than that. The shingles are on many homes in the Caribbean and St. Thomas and they survived 2 direct Cat 5 hurricanes with 205+mpg winds and there was zero damage.
8. Do they fade? ANSWER: We have a 40 year paint warranty that covers fading as well. We have a Kynar 500 finish which is the best on the market for metal roofing.
9. Does this require an existing roof tear off or can this go right on top? ANSWER: You can install over an existing roof. You still need underlayment and new flashings so it's not simply a go-over.
10. How do these hold up to expansion/contraction, building movements etc. ANSWER: These shingles have been in production since 1948 and are on thousands of roofs that are overr 70 years old and still going strong. Because the shingles are aluminum and also smaller, the expansion/contraction is minimal. The locks on the shingles are all different sizes to allow for this small movement.
11. Do these shingles require the installer to have special installation training? ANSWER: To get the proper warranty, yes. We do have DIY owners as well.
12. Can these shingles go over existing asphalt shingles that are over 30 years old? ANSWER: Yes they can under the right circumstances. The decking has to be solid so that we can nail into it.
