Ask Mary: what is the infill in turf, and is it safe for my kids and dogs?

Fair question, and worth asking. Infill is the granular material we brush down between the blades to hold them upright and help the turf drain and stay cooler. We use clean, non toxic infills, and for pets we most often go with Envirofill or ZeoFill, both built to flush odor through and hold up in the heat. Tell me who is using the yard and I will match the infill to it.

Ask Mary: Will I still get w**ds with artificial turf?

Yes, w**ds can still occur with artificial turf. They are most commonly found around the edges, but seeds carried by the wind, birds, and other outdoor activity can also land on the turf and begin to grow.

When w**ds appear, use your preferred w**d treatment according to the product directions. Artificial turf is low maintenance, not maintenance-free. The good news is that the upkeep is still minimal compared with natural grass or rock landscaping.

Invasive vegetation is a separate issue. In an upcoming Ask Mary, I'll talk about nutgrass, sissoo trees, and other aggressive plants that can affect artificial turf installations.

Ask Mary: can turf actually look luxurious, or does it always look cheap?

Ask Mary: how do I keep pet turf clean?

Five minutes a week does it. Scoop like you normally would, rinse with water and an enzyme spray now and then, and brush the high-traffic path. No mowing, no mud, no dead spots. Way less work than a real lawn and the dog cannot tell the difference.

Here is the honest version. Cooling infill and smart placement near shade do more than any buzzword on a label, and a quick rinse on a brutal afternoon drops the surface temp fast. I would rather tell you what actually helps in Arizona than sell you a marketing word. 17 years says it works.

Ask Mary: how long does a turf install take and how disruptive is it?

Most residential yards are a one to three day job. We handle the demo, the base, and the turf, and we leave the site clean. You lose your yard for a couple of days and get it back green for years. I keep you posted the whole way so there are no surprises.
