Not even close. Fall is one of my favorite times to install in Arizona. The heat has broken, monsoon season is behind us, and a yard that goes in now is ready for the best outdoor months we get: cool mornings, patio dinners, and family in town for the holidays.

It is also when a lot of people are deciding whether to overseed again. If you are about to buy rye seed and start watering three to four times a day, that is the moment to put a turf quote side by side with it.

Ask Mary: can a window really melt artificial grass? It can. Energy efficient Low-E glass can focus the sun on one strip of yard, and sometimes it is the neighbor's window. I look for it on every estimate so we can find the source and plan around it.

You can. People do. The part they regret is almost always the base.

Turf is eighty percent a base job. The fiber is what you see, but what is underneath determines whether the yard feels solid or spongy, whether it drains or puddles, whether the edges hold or curl up two years from now.

The steps that require a crew: compaction equipment — plate compactors, not a hand tamper — cutting and fitting any seam, and securing the edge correctly to existing hardscape. The tools cost money to rent and the technique takes practice.

Where I have seen DIY go well: small flat patches under two hundred square feet, no seams, drainage already sorted. Anything over that, the installation warranty alone usually tips the math toward a professional job.

Dog yards are the installation we talk about most — and the one most likely to go wrong if the base is built cheap.

The issue is not the turf. It is what happens under it. W**d barrier fabric traps ammonia. If it is in there, the yard smells no matter how much you rinse.

We do not put w**d barrier under a dog yard. We build for drainage, use the right infill for odor control, and set the pile height based on the dog — a ninety-pound lab needs a different build than two small dogs.

If you got a quote from someone else and they did not ask about your dogs first, ask them how they handle the base under a pet yard.

It is one of the most common reasons families call us. No pesticides, no fertilizer, no herbicides — those all go away the day you pull the grass out. Kids can be outside more when there is nothing being sprayed.

For play areas, padding systems go under the turf. Same concept as the rubber tile under playground equipment at a park. We size the padding depth to the fall height of whatever play structure is going in.

What I tell parents: ask about the infill. Some infills are rubber crumb, some are sand, some are organic. Each has trade-offs — heat, firmness, how much tracks into the house on bare feet. I walk through that at the estimate so you are choosing based on how your kids actually use the yard, not a brochure.

Yes, in most cases. Turf is installed in sections and panels. A damaged area can be cut out and replaced without touching the rest of the yard, as long as you have matching material available.

We keep records of every install we do, including the product line and lot. If you are calling us for a repair on an install we did, we can usually match it.

What is not worth repairing: a large area damaged by a drainage failure or a bad base. That is a sign the original install had a problem underneath, and patching the surface does not fix the base. We tell people that honestly.

Depends on how you use the yard.

Rock and gravel are low maintenance but not zero maintenance. They migrate, they hold heat, w**ds come through, and after a monsoon you are raking them back. In a yard with kids or dogs they are not comfortable to sit or play on.

Turf costs more upfront. The trade is a surface that stays in place, drains and can be used year-round. It is softer underfoot, stays cleaner after rain and does not migrate toward your back door every summer.

A lot of yards do both. Rock for purely decorative areas. Turf for anywhere a person or a dog is actually going to be.

Ask Mary: what happens if my fire pit or grill tips over on the turf?

Direct contact with a flame or a glowing coal bed will burn synthetic turf fiber. That is true for every fiber type.

What we tell customers: keep a non-combustible pad under a portable grill or fire pit. Concrete pavers, tile or a purpose-built grill mat work. A fire pit that stays in one place can be surrounded by hardscape during the install.

The same applies to charcoal. A bag of lit coals dropped is a guaranteed burn. Cigarette butts left on the surface can mark it over time.

We go through this at the estimate because the right placement can prevent it entirely.

Yes. We have four showroom locations: Phoenix, Mesa, Avondale and Tucson. Walk in and put your hands on the actual fiber. See what it looks like in natural light, how it feels underfoot, what different pile heights and blade shapes do.

Samples matter more than photos. A photo will make almost any turf look good. What you want to know is how the fiber holds up, whether it has texture variation so it reads as natural, and whether the backing has enough density that the blades stand up after you run your hand across them.

If you cannot make it to a showroom before we quote, we can bring samples to the estimate.

Ask Mary: I only need about 200 square feet. Do you do small jobs?

We do, but we are honest about minimums. Small jobs have the same mobilization cost as larger ones. Our minimum makes sure a small project is built right, with the same base preparation, drainage check and two-year installation warranty we put on a 3,000 square foot lawn.

Where small jobs work well: a dog run, a side yard, a patio surround, a small putting green. Areas where turf solves a specific problem and the space does not need to be big to be right.
