Reflecting on an incredible end-of-summer installation in Pleasantville, NY🌿

After years of working with this long-term client and watching the landscape evolve, it was exciting to continue our work on the property with a massive plant installation of 12,000 native species.

This new garden aimed at enhancing existing site features and reducing lawn area on steep slopes. We relied on shorter species such as prairie dropseed (Sporobolus heterolepis) and butterfly w**d (Asclepias tuberosa) to highlight the rock outcropping. We leaned into a grass heavy planting on the slopes with forbs and ferns dappling throughout.

A huge thank you to the hardworking crew at Gamboa Services LLC in Bridgeport, CT. Their dedication and expertise helped bring this project to life, and we couldn’t have done it without them.

We’re looking forward to watching this native landscape establish, thrive, and become an even more vibrant part of the local ecosystem!

A naturalistic approach to the landscape enabled new construction at this Hudson Valley residence to integrate with the region’s iconic pastoral character.

Gardens by the house and terraced vegetable garden lead to meadow and shrubland habitats created on former agricultural fields. Central to the meadow is a pond featuring both deep- and shallow-water planting benches that, in addition to offering distinct habitat, suggest these designed features have always been part of this landscape. Invasive species management and restoration plantings also occurred along the woodland edges.

It's an excellent time of year to observe Carex diversity in meadows!

Carex is a cool season plant that comes in a variety of textures and shapes, and is well adapted to extremes from full sun to shade.

Here's Team LWLA at work creating an avian grid deterrent for a client in Orange County, NY. The property sits on a small pond, and the goal is to discourage geese from entering the newly planted meadow area of the property while the plugs are getting established in their new home.

We attached reflective flagging tape to the grid lines we set up, which flutters in the wind and disrupt the birds flight path--they don't want to land in or near the obstacle. It also has the benefit of reminding humans that the translucent line is there and helps us avoid walking into them too!

Once the plugs are established, the grid will be removed.
