Every piece of furniture requires the maker to adhere to a center amount of "do it right." Certain ratios and proportions are somewhat set in stone, too much variance results in an unbalanced piece that feels off even if you're not quite sure why.
Cabriole legs are no exception, but I've always loved making them because it feels more like art than maths. Once the stock has been cut to rough shape, it's a combination of chisels, gouges, rasps, spokeshaves, and sandpaper until the leg has its timeless, subtle curves and elegant flow.
