Sometimes the best part of the job happens after we leave.

This homestead was already beautiful, tucked back in the woods; it was just time for a new shop. We handled site prep for the builder, opened up a great view overlooking Douglas and Jefferson Counties, and even created a sledding hill for the kids just in time for the snow.

Shoutout to Aidan Gardner at Zodiac Trucking for keeping us stocked with material.

This is our last pond of 2025, and we're happy with how this one turned out. This landowner called us this past summer about a pond that would fill… then slowly drain back to the same level every time.

During inspection, we found moisture on the backside of the dam, a good indicator of dam failure. After reviewing the pond’s construction history and drone footage, one thing stood out immediately: there was never a compactor visible on site.

When we opened the dam up, the cause was obvious:
• Topsoil (black dirt) trapped inside the dam
• Stumps, roots, and organic material buried in dam
• No evidence of a core trench or effective compaction

That organic layer aligned exactly with the water level the pond would never rise past.

We rebuilt the dam with proper compaction, expanded the pond, and removed an estimated ~500 tons of shelf rock along the way. By the end of the job, every bit of rock and clay was reused on site. No expensive haul-off, no waste, no leftovers. Call it good planning… or call me Houdini. 😄

Final result:
✔️ Nearly ⅓-acre larger
✔️ ~4’ deeper
✔️ Properly compacted dam built for long-term performance

Construction shortcuts don’t usually fail right away, but they always show up eventually.

We just wrapped up a big pasture-recovery job for a landowner in LeCompton, KS; the before/after photos tell the whole story. This ground had slowly filled in with hedge, cedar, and locust over the years, the kind of slow creep that doesn’t seem urgent until one day the pasture’s gone.

Most farmers don’t let their land get away from them on purpose , they just get busy. A couple seasons go by, then a few more, and the small sprouts you meant to deal with turn into full-blown trees. It happens to all of us in one way or another.

When we first walked the property, he was embarrassed to show us how far it had gotten, but this is what we do, we get it, life and work take priority. Once we got started, you could see the relief. He was just glad to have help getting his land back under control.

If you’ve ever wondered whether clearing pays off, this article breaks down why it often ends up making money through better forage, more grazeable acres, and long-term land value:

A Perry farmer needed a simple, functional fix - his cows were dropping into a 50' deep runoff gulley, and fencing it off meant we had to clear trees, cut the banks down, and build a land bridge.

Now he can run fence straight across, move cattle safely, and access part of his pasture without driving the long way around.
:
The pond-builder in me wanted to install a compacted mini-dam with overflow tube...but sometimes farmers just need dirt pushed, access improved, and a few years of good use until budgets allow for more. We get it. When our local farmers call, we build what they need: practical, safe, and ready to go.

Winter's a great time to improve access, open up new pasture, or clear fence lines for next season. If you need a hand, we're here to help.

Leaking From Day One. Here’s Why.

This photo shows the pond we’re moving to next week. It was half full when we arrived, and we’ve spent the last two days pumping it down so we can reach the basin and start repairs.

The landowner initially hired another local “pond specialist.” The pond leaked from day one, through the bottom and through the dam. When the landowner asked that contractor to fix it, their solution was to dump $70,000 worth of rock around the dam to “add pressure” and stop the leak.

After reviewing more than 100 photos from the original build, one thing was obvious:
There was zero compaction anywhere.

At no stage of construction was a compactor ever on site.

And here’s the truth:

Anyone who says they can compact a pond with machine tracks alone is lying to you. A proper pond requires a vibratory sheepsfoot compactor. There’s no shortcut.

We get called far too often to fix ponds that were never built correctly in the first place. If you’re planning a pond project or want to avoid expensive do-overs, make sure you understand what a legitimate build requires.

If you don't have it done right the first time, you'll find yourself doing it twice.

We're booking for spring 2026 and beyond.

Years of locust, hedge, and cedar had swallowed up this old pasture. When new landowners moved a little further out into the country, they called us to open it back up; not to make it bare, but to restore its beauty and balance.

We took out everything thorny and overgrown, burned and piled the debris, and left them with a clean slate to keep shaping on their own.

Sometimes it just takes a fresh set of eyes (and a couple of machines) to bring the land back to life.

That dark muck at the bottom of your pond?

It's not just dirt, it's years of decaying leaves, fish waste, and runoff stealing oxygen and turning your clear water cloudy.

The deeper it gets, the harder it is for your pond to breathe. Eventually, it chokes itself out.

If your pond smells, turns green fast, or feels shallower every year, it's time to fix the root problem, not just the symptoms.

Don't wait until your pond gives up. 😔

We restore ponds the right way. 😁

Most landowners have a vision; they don't always know how to get there.

Our Baldwin City customer wanted to enjoy his pond again, but years of cattails and overgrowth had taken it over. He shared his goals, trusted our experience, and let us bring that vision to life.

We sorted out the good from the bad, cleared the shoreline, and turned an overgrown mess back into a place worth sitting by with a cup of coffee again.
