Why does paint start peeling?

In many cases, the problem starts before the finish coat ever goes on. Poor surface preparation, incompatible coatings, excess moisture, or improper drying conditions can all affect how well new paint bonds and performs over time.

Cleaning, light sanding, and using the correct primer for the existing surface are especially important when working over older oil based coatings or previously painted wood. On exteriors, wood movement also plays a role. As wood expands and contracts with changes in moisture, older layers of paint can begin to loosen, bubble, flake, and peel.

30 years of wallpaper doesn’t come off with just one quick step.

When wallpaper has been in place for decades, the real work is getting the walls back to a clean, stable surface that’s actually ready for paint. That means removing the paper, thoroughly cleaning away the adhesive, sealing the drywall, repairing imperfections, sanding, priming, and only then applying the final paint.

Taking the time to prep correctly is what helps prevent old adhesive, damaged drywall, and uneven surfaces from showing through the new finish. For this kitchen, the final result will be a semi-gloss off-white that gives the room a completely refreshed look.

Here’s why we recommend maintenance schedules instead of waiting until outdoor wood needs a full restoration.

Frequent upkeep allows us to maintain the wood in smaller stages, often avoiding heavy sanding and the longer restoration process that can come with months of neglected exposure. Staying ahead of fading and wear helps protect the surface while extending the life of the wood.

By 3 months the finish can begin to fade, which is when we reapply RMP Finishes - Formerly Outdoor Defense Oil to restore protection and bring back the richness of the wood. Because this is a penetrating oil, maintenance is much more straightforward. We can reapply it over the existing finish rather than having to strip everything back and start over.

Staying on a regular maintenance schedule keeps exterior wood furniture looking refreshed and protected before it reaches the point of a more costly and time consuming restoration.

A lasting exterior repaint starts with addressing what’s underneath.

For this weathered exterior, we first assessed the condition of the surfaces before beginning the repaint. We soft washed the eaves and siding, scraped areas with peeling paint, and lightly sanded to create a smoother, cleaner surface.

From there, we repainted the eaves, siding, and overhead garage doors to refresh the appearance while adding a new layer of protection. The brown trim, gutters, corners, accent trim, and garage door details were also repainted, with extra care taken to restore the architectural details throughout the home.

Watch this 2 month, award-winning kitchen renovation come together in one minute.

As part of the renovation, we completed a full cabinet repaint using Chantilly Lace by Benjamin Moore for the main cabinetry and Hale Navy for the island. The contrast adds depth while keeping the kitchen bright and balanced.

The cabinet doors were removed and refinished at our shop, where we could control the spray environment and achieve a smoother, more durable finish before reinstalling them on site.

Designed by Harrell Design + Build the finished kitchen also features a wine cooler and oven built into the island, blending function with the overall design. The project went on to receive a Platinum Award for Residential Addition.
