You turn on your AC and notice a strange smell coming from the vents.

Sometimes, this happens because dust has built up in the system, or moisture has collected around the indoor unit. A dirty filter can also cause odors.

If the smell goes away after a few minutes, it may not be a serious problem. But if it keeps coming back, gets stronger, or smells musty or burnt, don't ignore it.

Start by checking your air filter. If it's dirty, replace it.

The thermostat says 74°F.

But your house still feels... sticky.

If you've experienced that, you're not imagining it.

Your AC does more than lower the temperature. As it cools your home, it also removes moisture from the air.

So if your home feels cool but still humid, your AC may not be removing moisture as effectively as it should.

There are several possible reasons, including:
➡️ airflow problems
➡️ an oversized system
➡️an issue affecting how your AC is operating

And that's why simply turning the thermostat down isn't always the answer.

Think closing a vent means your AC has less work to do?

Not necessarily.

Your HVAC system is designed to move a certain amount of air through your home. Closing a vent doesn't tell the system to produce less air. It simply changes where that air can go.

When you close multiple vents, you can affect the airflow and pressure within the ductwork.

So if you're closing vents to save energy, it may be worth taking a closer look at how your HVAC system is actually designed to operate.
