To maintain a high quality of life, the City of Leawood, KS Government continually reinvests in their infrastructure as part of their Residential Street Reconstruction Program. Each year, they select a set of streets that are most in need. The 2023 project site spanned three locations: 97th Place between Mission and Ensley, Ensley Lane North from 91st to 93rd, and Ensley Lane from the City limits to Ensley Lane South Cul-De-Sac. Learn how we tackled each here: https://loom.ly/XtAlTS0

Back-to-school season is all about new beginnings, and Hands to Hearts KC wants every kid to start the year out strong.

This month, our Community Service Committee partnered with Hands to Hearts KC, which serves students across 20 elementary schools, two preschools, and two middle schools. Together, we collected full-size backpacks, plain T-shirts, girls’ stretch pants, and boys’ sweatpants to give students what they need for a successful start to the school year.

Providing these essentials can help ease stress for both kids and caregivers, allowing students to focus on what matters most: learning, growing, and feeling ready for the year ahead.

While our work at Camp Funston is focused on stormwater improvements, our Roadway Team has played a critical role as well. They designed 7 miles of street replacement and repair to allow the installation of stormwater infrastructure under the roads. These improvements support travel around Fort Riley’s railhead, logistics centers, motor pools, and other facilities essential for logistics.

Having both teams in-house allowed us to seamlessly work together to find the right solution. It also simplified communication for the Fort Riley Directorate of Public Works.

Managing drainage was the primary focus of our work with the Fort Riley Directorate of Public Works (DPW) at Camp Funston. So, it’s no surprise our Stormwater Team played a critical role in designing this project. They started by analyzing the system, looking at a 100-year design storm and creating the plans.

Then, they used PCSWMM to model the area and determine if the design would function and fit in the ground. The final plans included ditch systems, culverts, and enclosed storm sewers. To meet the project's goals, the team upsized the pipes and culverts, lowered the ditches, added and upsized RCB’s, and changed some of the grading. They also developed a design analysis report, project specifications, and worked with a consultant to create a cost estimate. Three regional detention ponds, an upsized outlet through an existing Kansas River levee, and two additional large levee outlets were added as well.

Gathering the right data was critical to the success of our work at Camp Funston, so we began the project with a preliminary study. We performed an initial evaluation of the system and identified potential challenges created by a large and flat drainage area encircled by a levee on three sides. The Affinis team used a van-mounted LiDAR unit to survey the bulk of the area within the right-of-way, allowing us to cover the large area more quickly and safely. Our Survey Team then supplemented those efforts with an additional topographic survey that included the stormwater and sanitary sewer systems.

Having a wide variety of services and disciplines in-house allows us to efficiently find the best solution for our clients. Our work with the Fort Riley Directorate of Public Works (DPW) at Camp Funston is a great example of that. The DPW wanted to provide an efficient drainage system for Camp Funston that would reduce work for operations and make maintenance activities less frequent.

To do this, they leveraged our survey, stormwater, and roadway teams to find a solution that drained the very flat grades and improved undersized pipes to meet the current 10-year design standard. Over the next few days, we'll share how our teams’ close collaboration is delivering a solution to protect area homeowners.

Earlier this week, our co-workers were on a serious roll. They traded lane design for strikes and spares at Ward Parkway Lanes.

Why did we go bowling? Well, if you had to "pin" us down, we'd say events like these keep us connected.
