Tips of the Day!!!
Replacing your AC filter once a month is the cheapest insurance you can give an air conditioning system — especially here in Florida where systems run 8-10 months a year.
Here's why it's crucial:
1. Energy bills skyrocket when it's clogged
A dirty filter chokes airflow. Your blower has to work harder and run longer to push the same amount of cold air. The Department of Energy estimates a clogged filter can increase energy consumption by 15%. That's a filter that costs $10-$20 costing you $30-$50 more a month on power.
2. It prevents the most common breakdowns
Low airflow is the #1 cause of:
• Frozen evaporator coil - no air over the coil means it ices over, then leaks water and stops cooling
• Burnt-out blower motor - overheats from working against restriction
• Short-cycling and compressor failure - the most expensive part to replace
A $20 filter prevents a $1,500+ repair.
3. Air quality and health
The filter is the only thing between your lungs and everything in the air — dust, pollen, pet dander, mold spores, drywall dust from jobsites. In Central Florida, with the humidity, pollen, and constant AC recirculation, a saturated filter just starts recirculating that stuff. You get more allergies, more dust on furniture, and that musty smell when the AC kicks on.
4. Humidity control
Florida ACs don't just cool, they dehumidify. When airflow is weak, the coil doesn't remove humidity properly. House feels cold but clammy at 74°F, thermostat keeps calling, and you get a perfect setup for mold in the ducts.
5. System life
A system that's breathing easy lasts 12-15 years. One that's constantly starved for air? You're looking at 8-10 years. For your customers, that's the difference between a system you installed lasting and one they blame you for.
The pro tip to tell customers:
• Basic 1" fiberglass / pleated filters: every 30 days in summer, 45 days max in winter.
• If they have pets, allergies, construction nearby, or keep windows open: check every 2-3 weeks.
• 4" media filters: they can go 3-6 months, but still check monthly.
