Record breaking heat is on the way, what you need to know.

AC’s in our climate are designed for 85-95 degrees while maintaining 78 inside the home and as the temperature exceeds 100 degrees many AC’s will not be able to keep up and this does not mean yours is broken. Unlike furnaces, which have extra capacity to heat up a home, an AC is designed to maintain temperature only and is not designed to cool off a home, especially not on hot days that are well outside of the normal for our region. Ben's Heating designs beyond the code required temperatures to keep you cool but no properly sized AC will be able to maintain temperature this weekend.

The hottest temperature recorded in Portland was 107.2 degrees in 1942 and if you have checked the forecast you know that we may have 3 days of up to 108 degree heat, maybe even a new record high. Here are some tips to keep your house comfortable.
1. Ensure the filter in your system is clean. A dirty filter can reduce the capacity of your air conditioner making it harder to stay cool.
2. Do not use a setback on your thermostat. If you want the house at 75 degrees, set your thermostat for 75 degrees all day and night.
3. If you are having issues keeping up with the heat, try “pre cooling” the house and set the temperature lower in the colder part of the day so the house can be “pre cooled” as the temperature rises.
4. Close all blinds and cover all windows. The majority of heat coming into a home comes in through the windows, so covering them will make the biggest difference.
5. Ensure all registers are open. Even if you want more airflow to certain parts of the home, this causes back pressure in the ductwork and reduces the capacity of the air conditioner.
6. Don’t worry, if your air conditioner runs and doesn’t shut down that’s perfectly normal, in fact it means its doing its job. AC’s are meant to run for long periods of time, its actually bad for them if they turn on and then off quickly.
7. Try to limit use of incandescent lighting, cooking with a stove, showering(which adds humidity) and use of bath fans or range hoods as these let out the cool air and bring in hot air through cracks in the home and ductwork.
8. The best way to add capacity to your home is your have ducts sealed. Ductwork looses 15-30% of the conditioned air that goes through it.
9. Keep your AC maintained, currently we are only scheduling maintenance for members of our Ben's Planned Service Agreements.
10. If all else fails and your AC breaks you can schedule a service with us and we will do everything we can to keep you comfortable.

Stay cool, friends!

What Does AFUE Mean? | Ben's Heating & Air Conditioning | Portland, OR

While an air conditioner’s efficiency is measured by its SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating, an electric or gas- or oil-fired furnace’s efficiency is measured by its AFUE, or average fuel utilization efficiency. This standard measurement is given in percentages, letting you know how much of your fuel is actually used to heat your Oregon home and how much fuel is wasted.

You always worry when hiring a contractor as to what they are going to do. Is it going to be quality especially when the job is thousands of dollars. We were going to replace our furnace and air conditioner. We met with 7 heating companies and received their bids. We chose the companies who had the best reviews. I really liked Keith who represented Ben’s Heating because he made us feel comfortable that they were a quality company. Keith as well as the other companies spent a lot of time talking to us about the project As it turns out their bid was the best of the seven by several thousand dollars. They were on time and the two men sent were excellent and did a great job. I’m very glad we hired Ben’s Heating I really recommend them as I have first hand experience with this company that they will give you the best price from all the others and do an excellent job. I have had Ben's since the 80's. When they do a service call, they open up the door of the furnace and they KNOW how everything works inside!!! (even the computer part!)
Outstanding customer service and technical service. New to area and needed my a/c looked at. Had several recommendations from neighbors and decided to have Ben's come out and take a look. Really liked that the technician called and texted he when he was on his way and I could see in real time how long it would be before his arrival. Technician was very considerate of current COVID restrictions and was very polite. Fixed the issue on the spot and had a thorough receipt emailed to me. I highly recommend Ben's and am very happy that I found an honest and reliable heating and air conditioning company 👍
We highly recommend Ben’s ..
UPDATE: Last night, through Facebook, Tim contacted us. He set a time, came over and corrected a very simple issue with the furnace. I mean, what company owner sees FB at 8PM on Friday night. I'm so glad he did. I'm so glad I have heat this morning. But mostly, they've retained a customer for as long as I'm in their area. Always, the workers and techs who have come out have been respectful and well trained. Thank you! I'm curious about your service. Your techs were out today to service out furnace and compressor which we purchased through you and installed last year. This was the first annual service. The furnace is not coming on. Your techs left it non-working. Your call center is telling me that no one will be available until Monday? You are able to have a Heating and AC business and not respond to non-working heating and AC? Especially when it's your techs fault it's not working?
Wow, just bought this house a year ago and guess what, the HVAC system needed replacing. I had several quotes and I have to say Brandon was just fantastic. He came to my home, went over everything was very concerned about what I needed. He could not have been nicer or more considerate. He found major issues with the duct work and had their specialist Jack come back with him to go over the entire house and advise on what was needed. Between the two of them they came up with a plan, advised me as to what I needed and the process started. Then Mike and Zach came out to start the installation process. They not only had to install the system but we found out the AC needed replacing as well. Again, Brandon was here and we had a long discussion, thoughts and opinions going back and forth and we decided to go for it. So Mike and Zach went back to the shop, built a new return system and filter box etc. Those two were also incredible to work with. Not once did they act bothered, rude or unconcerned when I appeared in the basement. They always took their time to explain everything to me and showed me what they were doing and why. The job was so professionally done. They took the fact that I have 5 dogs into the equation and wired the AC unit outside as close to the house as possible instead of along side of the unit so the girls couldn’t dig or chew on it and be safe. They were so trustworthy that I left the area open for them when I couldn’t be here. That is something I never do! They were incredible and when they left the area was as clean as it was when they got there. Maybe even more!!! Thanks to All Of Bens Heating, everyone I dealt with was just fantastic. 100% satisfied.
Thank you thank you Ben's Heating for my warm house! Heat pump in the kitchen and one in the bedroom and my home is cozy and toasty warm. You are the best.
Prompt arrival, got right to work and finished half a day earlier than planned. Real happy about the service, the technicians and their applied knowledge made a huge inconvenience (lack of AC) disappear quickly. I would recommend them over the other "local" hvac companies.
