Can we talk about wash day for a second? 😬
Everyone wants the definition, the shine, the “how is your curl pattern so perfect”. But almost nobody asks about the step that actually makes it possible. It’s not the product you use after. It’s not even the cut. It’s what happens at the bowl, before any of that.
Cleansing isn’t just “getting the hair wet and adding shampoo.” A real cleanse means the
scalp is actually massaged — section by section — because that’s where circulation happens, where buildup lives, and where healthy growth starts or stalls. Curls especially hold onto
product and residue along the shaft more than straight hair does, so a rushed shampoo shows up later as dullness, buildup, and curls that just don’t want to cooperate.
And conditioning isn’t a “quick rinse and go” step either. Shampoo opens the cuticle to clean it, conditioner is what closes it back up and seals in the moisture your curls need to actually
hold their shape. Skip it, rush it, or wipe it out too fast, and you’re skipping the exact step responsible for the definition and softness you’re chasing.
This is why every single service starts here for me. Not the cut. Not the style. The wash.
If it’s been a while since your hair got a real cleanse and condition (not just a quick rinse at
home), that’s usually the first place to start. Your curls will thank you.
