Work has been busy lately with a moose running around town and other things so I haven’t made it to the garden until today to harvest and holy cow we have veggies! Got everything picked and now we have to do some preserving and cooking 😊😳

I was up and out early before the smoke settled in and it was so good to be out weeding, watering and harvesting before it got too hot. Planted the fall plants, had to improvise to cover them from the sun and heat, but I’m down to only one shelf of perennials in the grow room. Took a break in the afternoon to visit our friends vineyard and then came home to harvest a bouquet for me, feed the critters and watch the dragonflies before heading inside ❤️🌸

The smoke is thick today. I went out early to water and then had to check on some things this evening. I hate not spending more time enjoying the gardens but my sinuses, eyes and lungs can’t handle this fire smoke. Still, everything looks beautiful and it looks like I’ll have things to harvest tomorrow. Husband is on the coast in cleaner air and cooler temps and it looks like he’s bringing back crab, cod and salmon so we are both busy harvesting, but he has the better deal 😂😒

Today’s plant highlight is the poppy. There are so many varieties to choose from and they are easy to collect seeds from. Each pod produces hundred of seeds. They are also easy to sow. Spread in your beds in the fall or spread them on top of the snow in February and let the moisture soak them into the soil. I have many seed packets available for $2 ea. of a poppy mix from my garden. They are a mix of seed, peony, oriental etc. poppies. Each packet contains well over 200 seeds. DM me if you want to grab some. Available till sold out 😊

Today I am highlighting the Zinnia flower. There are so many great things about this flower. Pollinators LOVE them, especially hummingbirds. They are a great cut flower for a beginning flower gardener. They are easy to sow, they grow fast, they will bloom all summer long into the fall, the list goes on. When they are young, they need to be pinched and you can take those cuttings and plant them to make more zinnias! Plus they are beautiful and one of my favorites here on the farm 😊🌱🌸

The smoke in the air was awful yesterday as a large part of Oregon continues to burn. Still, chores have to be done so I was out in the garden all day, weeding, trimming, harvesting vegetables and collecting larkspur and poppy seeds so I could tear out poppies and prep the bed for fall flowers. The squash bugs are terrible this year and have already taken one of my plants despite my attempts to control them so I think I’ll skip a year of squash next year and replace that bed with more flowers 😊 Bad photos but while I was out there I had hummingbirds on the zinnias, a dragonfly stopped by and rested on a poppy stalk and I had a red admiral butterfly on the straw flower. I love my little visitors.

Fires all around the state and some pretty close but still there are chores to do. It was 104 today so I stayed inside most of the day till about 8:30 PM to go take care of the chickens and water the garden. The sunsets are amazing even if I don’t love what’s happening right now

Meet Rip. His role on the farm is to chase squirrels away from the pumpkins, steal my shoes from the garage and bring them to me, act scary but do nothing, and he’s our comic relief and his dad’s hunting buddy. He is part human I swear. He also loves but is afraid of Willow. She definitely rules the roost here, and we love them both ❤️🐾
