So much data—but the key is knowing where to look. 🔋

Aaron's checking a client’s GENEREX BACS system and reviewing the data after system work.

One of the biggest takeaways: after maintenance or adjustments, always test the system before returning it to normal operation. Make sure everything is communicating, reporting, and alarming as expected.

And if you’d rather have someone else handle that part, that’s where our team comes in. Aaron woufl love to come see you!

A small power glitch. An entire show stopped. 🎸⚡

This weekend, Cassidy was at a live band performance when the power suddenly went out...
It was just a brief interruption, but it was enough to bring the show to a halt. And unfortunately, the music never started back up.

It’s a simple reminder that the impact of a power interruption isn't always measured by how long it lasts.

In a data center, even a momentary disruption can have consequences that last much longer.

❌️ The real question isn't just “What happens if the power goes out?”
✅️ It's “How quickly can we recover when it does?”

🪫 Your backup power is only as reliable as its weakest battery.🪫

As AI drives power demands across data centers, there's an important question operators should be asking: How much do we really know about the health of our backup batteries?

A recent article from Parameter explores the growing gap between backup power redundancy and battery health visibility, and why continuous monitoring matters more than ever.

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are becoming an increasingly important part of the critical power conversation—but what exactly are they?

At a basic level, a BESS stores electrical energy in batteries so it can be used when it’s needed. For critical facilities, that stored energy can provide another tool for managing how and when power is available (in addition to UPS and generators).

Depending on the application, BESS can help facilities manage peak demand, support the grid, integrate renewable energy, and strengthen overall energy resilience. And as power demands continue to grow, understanding where energy storage fits into the critical power ecosystem is becoming increasingly valuable for operators.

We’ll be digging deeper into BESS over the next few weeks—how it works, where it fits, and what operators should know.

It’s all about connections 🔋

A battery monitoring system is only as reliable as the data it receives. Aidrian is working through the battery connections to help ensure the monitoring system has accurate, reliable visibility across the string.

Good monitoring starts with getting the details just right.

Your monitoring system has 10,000 data points. Great.
Now the harder question: Which ones would your operator look at first?

More data doesn’t automatically mean better visibility. Sometimes the biggest opportunity isn’t adding another sensor—it’s making sure the information you already have is useful, accessible, and focused on what actually matters.

We explore that idea in our latest blog, read it now: https://www.ptisolutions.com/too-many-monitoring-system-data-points/

💬 For the data center operators: what’s one piece of information you wish was easier to find in your monitoring system?

Discover why more data doesn’t always mean better data center monitoring and how actionable insights, visibility, and smarter monitoring help operators respond faster.

The Best Time to Learn Your Monitoring System Isn't During an Alarm

When an alarm goes off, your team shouldn't be figuring out the monitoring system at the same time they're figuring out the problem.
❌ Where is the equipment?
❌ What does this alarm mean?
❌ Who needs to respond?
❌ What happens if the condition gets worse?

Those questions are much easier to answer when there isn't an active issue demanding immediate attention.

That's why familiarity with your monitoring system matters long before an alarm occurs.

Give newer team members opportunities to navigate the system. Walk through equipment locations and naming conventions. Review alarm priorities and escalation paths. Test notifications. Keep documentation current and accessible.

And don't limit that knowledge to the handful of people who use the system every day.
Your monitoring system should be a tool the team understands—not something that only makes sense when your most experienced operator is in the room.

A little time spent training and testing during normal operations can make a big difference when conditions aren't normal.

✅️ An alarm should trigger a response—not a training session.

This is out of this world. 🚀

Space-based data centers certainly aren’t going to be the answer for every one —and as this article points out, there are still major questions around cooling, power, bandwidth, launch costs, and scalability.

But we're noticing the bigger trend behind the idea.
For decades, the data center has largely meant a large, purpose-built facility sitting on a piece of land. Now we’re seeing the industry challenge that assumption—from undersea concepts to modular and edge deployments, and now potentially orbital computing.

Where can compute live? Where should it live? And how do we design, monitor, and support critical infrastructure when the traditional data center footprint starts to change?

Space data centers may be an extreme example, but the desire to rethink where data centers belong is very real. And that makes this a fascinating one to watch.

When was the last time you tested the alarm—not just the sensor?

It’s easy to test a leak sensor, temperature probe, or other monitoring point and call it a success when the system recognizes the event.

But detection is only the first step.
The real test is what happens next...

When an alarm is triggered:
Did the right person actually receive it?
Did the alert clearly identify what happened and where?
Was the severity obvious?
Did the person receiving it have enough information to know what to do next?

A sensor can work perfectly while the notification process around it has gaps. Contacts change. Escalation paths become outdated. Equipment gets renamed. Locations change. Notifications get misconfigured.

That’s why testing should go beyond “Did the sensor trigger?”

Test the entire path—from detection → notification → understanding → response.

Because an alarm that reaches the wrong person, points them to the wrong place, or leaves them wondering what to do next isn't providing the protection you think it is.
The goal isn't simply to know that something happened. It's to make sure the right person can act when it does.

Another day at the office at PTI. 🔋

Sorting 6mm, 8mm, and 10mm tab washers for battery monitoring systems. Not the most glamorous part of data center monitoring—but definitely one of the many little details that happens behind the scenes (and keep things running at PTI).

Keep counting, April!!
