Thomas Edison and his team at Menlo Park successfully tested the first commercially practical incandescent light bulb — a carbonized cotton thread filament that burned for 13.5 hours.

After more than 1,200 experiments and 6,000 materials tested, this breakthrough proved that electric lighting could truly replace gas lamps and candles. Edison didn’t stop there — he later discovered that a carbonized bamboo filament could shine for over 1,200 hours, setting the standard for years to come.
