Today’s job called for a crane-assisted removal, taking this tall tree down in controlled sections instead of letting heavy pieces fall around the house and property.

The climber makes the cut, the crane takes the weight, and each section gets moved exactly where it needs to go.

Mulch is good.

A volcano piled against the trunk is not.

Tree trunks and root flares weren’t designed to stay buried under a mountain of wet mulch.

A better approach is a reasonable layer spread outward while keeping the base of the trunk visible.

Sometimes helping a tree means doing less, not more.

If a leaning tree suddenly has lifting soil, cracking ground, or visible movement around the roots, that’s not something to put on next month’s list.

The root system is what keeps the whole tree standing.

Movement at the base can be a much bigger concern than what’s happening in the canopy.

If something around the base of a tree suddenly looks different, have it checked.

That big “V” where two trunks grow together can become one of the weakest parts of a tree.

When bark gets trapped between competing stems, the connection can become weaker as the tree gets larger and heavier.

That doesn’t mean every double-trunk tree is dangerous.

It does mean it’s something worth paying attention to — especially when the split sits over a home, driveway, fence, or parking area.
