The evenings start disappearing fast this time of year.

That is not your imagination. As we move farther into fall, Oklahoma gets less daylight because of the way Earth is tilted as it travels around the sun.

Wind forms because air moves from areas of higher pressure toward areas of lower pressure. The bigger that pressure difference becomes, the stronger the wind often gets.

In fall, passing fronts and changing weather systems can tighten those pressure differences across the Plains. That is why a calm morning can turn into a breezy afternoon when the weather pattern starts shifting.

The first cool mornings of fall can feel colder than the number on your weather app suggests.

Part of that comes down to acclimatization. After months of Oklahoma heat, your body gets used to warmer conditions. So when a mild fall morning finally shows up, it can feel noticeably cooler than the same temperature might feel in spring.

Wind and lower humidity can add to that feeling too. A breezy, dry morning often feels sharper than a still, humid one at the same temperature.

That familiar “rain smell” has a name.

It is called petrichor.

During dry stretches, natural compounds build up on soil and other surfaces. When raindrops hit porous ground, tiny particles get kicked into the air, carrying that earthy smell with them.

One of the compounds involved is geosmin, which comes from microorganisms living in the soil. Our noses are especially good at picking it up, which is why the smell can seem so strong even before much rain has fallen.
