The honest trade-off, since nobody puts it on a spec sheet.

A battery is silent, needs no fuel delivery, and can live inside a garage, which a combustion unit cannot. What it has is a finite amount of stored energy, so the design conversation is about which circuits matter to you: the furnace, the fridge, a few outlets and the internet will run a long time. The whole house at once will not.

Two things are happening at once, and only one of them is the battery.

Cold slows the chemistry inside the pack, so it holds and delivers less. Then the cabin heater draws from that same pack, because there is no engine making waste heat to borrow.

The fix most owners miss: precondition while still plugged in. Warming the cabin and the battery on house power rather than on the pack means you leave the driveway with the range you actually paid for.

Here is the arithmetic that surprises people.

A typical portable heater on high draws 1500 watts. At 120 volts that is roughly 12.5 amps. A standard 15 amp household circuit is only rated to carry 12 amps continuously, and a heater running all evening is the definition of continuous.

So one heater, by itself, can sit at or past the limit before anything else in the room is even plugged in. And never run one through an extension cord or a power strip.

The limit is on the box, and almost nobody reads it.

Every light set specifies a maximum number of sets you can connect end to end. On old incandescent strands that number is small, often three. On LEDs it is far higher because each strand draws a fraction of the current, which is why the two should never be mixed on one run.

A timer helps too, not for safety but because it stops the display running unattended at three in the morning.

Automatic means something specific, and it is worth knowing what.

A transfer switch sits between the utility feed and your panel. It senses the outage, disconnects from the grid, starts the unit and moves your circuits over, usually inside a minute, with nobody home required. It also prevents backfeeding the line, which is what protects the crews working to restore your power.

Most units also run a short self test weekly, so you find out about a problem on a Tuesday afternoon rather than during a storm.

Worth doing before you need it rather than during.

Getting approved while nothing is wrong means that when a panel finally has to be replaced, or a generator becomes urgent after a long outage, you are choosing based on what your home actually needs instead of what you can cover this month.

The approval costs you nothing to have sitting there, and it takes the pressure out of the conversation.

Here is the part that costs people money when it is skipped.

Manufacturer warranties on this equipment generally require installation by an authorized installer. Have a generator or a battery put in by someone outside that network and you may still have a working system, but you do not necessarily have a warranty on it, and that surfaces at the worst possible time.

So the credential is not decoration. It is the thing standing behind the equipment for the next decade.

Two more things worth knowing, and one thing not to do.

A breaker that trips is doing its job. A breaker you reset three times in one evening is telling you the circuit is carrying more than it should, and resetting it again does not change that.

Also watch for lights that dim only when a large appliance starts, and for a receptacle where a plug no longer sits tight. A loose connection generates heat long before it generates a smell.
