Today, as we celebrate America’s 250th birthday, we gather with grateful hearts for the blessings of liberty and the nation we call home. For 250 years, generations of Americans have stood together through triumphs and trials, united by the enduring ideals of freedom, courage, and hope.

But today is more than hotdogs and hamburgers and tonight is about more than fireworks and celebration. It is also about remembrance. The freedoms we enjoy were never free. They were secured through the courage and sacrifice of brave men and women who answered the call to serve, many of whom gave their lives so that we could live in liberty. We honor that debt of freedom with humble gratitude.

As Christians, we are also reminded that the greatest freedom of all came through an even greater sacrifice. Jesus Christ shed His blood on the cross to set us free from sin and to offer the hope of eternal life. While the sacrifices of our nation’s heroes and the sacrifice of Christ are different in purpose and magnitude, both call us to lives of gratitude, faithfulness, and service.
May we honor those who have defended our nation’s freedom by living as responsible citizens, and may we honor our Savior by living according to His truth and love.

As we celebrate America’s 250th birthday, let us never forget the price that has been paid for the freedoms we enjoy, and let us commit ourselves to leaving this nation stronger for generations yet to come.
