Artis Construction

In our North Charleston shop, Braden Crutchmer, our Shop Manager, is building a garden gate for a home on the peninsula. Here he is fitting the bottom rail to its splined panel. The top of the rail is cut on a slope so rainwater sheds outward instead of settling into the joint, which is where a gate first begins to fail. It is a detail no one will notice, and it is the reason the gate will still be standing decades from now.

Braden graduates from the American College of the Building Arts this May and will continue his work with us. He joins a long line of ACBA graduates at Artis, beginning with our co-founder, Guyton Ash. We are proud to be the largest employer of ACBA graduates in South Carolina. We are also proud of what the college protects: the hand skills this city was built on, passed to the people who will care for it next.

Some houses have been standing since before there was a United States to stand in. This one, built in the 1760s, is one of them.

Today we opened its doors for a rare look behind the scenes of a complex historic restoration, hosting peers from the Jenrette Foundation as they toured a few of Charleston’s most significant properties, joined by Historic Charleston Foundation.

Artis exists to keep buildings like this one standing for the next 260 years, not just the next 26. That’s the same conviction behind the Jenrette Foundation’s work advancing education and stewardship in historic preservation, and behind Historic Charleston Foundation’s decades of protecting Charleston’s architectural heritage. Different organizations, same belief: this history is worth the effort it takes to save it.

Hosted by Guyton Ash and Tim Sites, co-owners of Artis Construction. Tour led by Guyton Ash.

Built in 1930, this home is now in the middle of a full renovation - and we mean full. We’re reconfiguring the footprint inside to maximize the flow for modern living, while designing a spectacular outdoor living space.

Pull back the walls and you find the bones - original brick. It’s the kind of detail nobody will ever see again once the walls close back up, which is exactly why we stop and notice it while we can.

Restoration work is slow, deliberate, and done by hand - brick by brick, corbel by corbel. That’s the job, and we wouldn’t want it any other way.

More on this one as it comes together.
