Japanse Stilt Grass Alert!

If you have Japanese stiltgrass invading your yard, NOW IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST TIME TO TACKLE IT.

Here is what you need to know to win the battle!

It is a strict annual: It does not survive the winter like a perennial. Every single plant you see grew from a seed this year, and every plant will die with the first frost.

Pull it after the rain: Stiltgrass has incredibly shallow roots. If it rained recently, grab a pair of gloves. It pulls out of the ground with almost zero effort.

Weed-whack to stop seeds: If you have too much to pull, grab your w**d whacker. Cut it down continually right now to prevent any seed heads from forming. Because it is an annual, if it cannot make seeds, it cannot reproduce.

Avoid pre-emergents (like Preen): Chemical pre-emergents can harm the dormant seeds of beneficial native plants you actually want in your yard.

It is a marathon, not a sprint: Stiltgrass seeds can stay viable in the soil for a few years. It is virtually impossible to clear that existing underground seed bank all at once.

Consistency is key! It requires a yearly chore of pulling or whacking, but you will see the outbreaks diminish each season.
As an example, it took me 3 years of using this exact method to completely eliminate it on my own property. Stick with it, keep those seed heads off, and you will win the long game!

🌸 THIS FALL, THINK BEYOND MUMS! 🌸

Mums may be everywhere this time of year, but if you want beautiful fall color and a plant that actually gives back to our local ecosystem, consider planting New England Aster instead!

Native to Connecticut, New England Aster produces masses of gorgeous purple-to-violet flowers in late summer and fall, just when many other plants are beginning to fade. Even better, those flowers provide an important late-season source of nectar and pollen for native bees, butterflies and other pollinators preparing for winter or migration.

And unlike the mums we often buy each fall and toss at the end of the season, New England Aster is a hardy native perennial. Plant it once and enjoy it year after year. It returns each spring, grows larger and more beautiful as it establishes, and becomes part of a living, functioning garden rather than just seasonal decoration.

We absolutely love getting photos like this from our clients!

A monarch caterpillar on swamp milkw**d that we planted earlier this year as part of a native garden installation. We included several different varieties of milkw**d, so seeing this is incredibly rewarding. THIS is why we do what we do, and why we love it. 😊

This is now the 5th property this year where we've found monarch caterpillars in gardens we designed and planted. It's such a wonderful feeling to know these gardens are already making a difference.

We wanted to show one of the landscapes we installed this year and how it has progressed after just two months.

In the backyard, there was originally a simple planting bed off the new patio. It contained just a couple of peonies, some tiger lilies, zebra grass, and a few other non-native plants.

We extended the bed by removing the lawn behind the fire pit and wrapping the planting around to the back of the patio. We also removed the strip of grass around a tree behind the patio, creating a connected bed so it flowed naturally instead of leaving an awkward strip of lawn.

We planted several varieties of native shrubs along with 50 native perennials, then finished everything with crisp edging and fresh mulch.

In the front of the house, there was a small triangular patch of grass near a secondary entrance. We removed the lawn, created a new garden bed, and added several inkberries as foundation plantings, a beautiful weeping redbud, and 18 native perennials. The bed was then edged and mulched to complete the transformation.

We also provide ongoing maintenance for this garden, including w**ding, monitoring plant health, fertilizing only when needed, and deadheading and trimming throughout the season.

Here are a few photos of the garden just two months later. Everything is already filling in beautifully. Give it another year, and this landscape will truly look like it has been there for years, with the lush, layered look that only a well-designed native garden can provide.

One of Connecticut's finest native shrubs is Clethra alnifolia, commonly known as Summersweet. Blooming in mid to late summer when many other shrubs have finished flowering, its fragrant white (or sometimes pink) flower spikes become magnets for native bees, bumblebees, butterflies, moths, and many other pollinators. Just as importantly, it also serves as a host plant for the larvae of several native moth species, helping support the entire food web, not just the adult pollinators we notice most.

Summersweet is an incredibly versatile shrub, thriving in full sun to partial shade and in average to consistently moist soils. It naturally grows along streambanks, wetlands, and woodland edges, making it an excellent choice for rain gardens or areas where other shrubs struggle with moisture. Once established, it is relatively low maintenance, deer-resistant compared to many other natives, and provides beautiful yellow fall color in addition to its summer blooms. If you're looking to add beauty, fragrance, and real ecological value to your Connecticut landscape, Clethra alnifolia is hard to beat.

GREAT REPLACEMENT for butterfly bush, Japanese spirea, burning bush and other non-native shrubs.

As someone who spends a lot of time outdoors, I can absolutely attest to this. One of my favorite things to do is walk our gardens and property at night to watch the nocturnal pollinators. (Yes, there is an entire world of pollinators that comes alive after dark!)

Our property is absolutely filled with fireflies at night. On the other hand, I've visited friends' homes with pristine lawns, very few gardens, and bright outdoor lights left on all night long...not a single firefly to be found. The difference is striking.

Fireflies have declined 50-75% across the US in the last 30 years.
Why:
LAWN CHEMICALS: Firefly larvae live in leaf litter and moist soil for 2 YEARS. Grub killers, broad-spectrum insecticides, and lawn fungicides kill them before they ever glow.
LEAF BLOWERS: Firefly larvae LIVE in leaf litter. Blow it away every fall → no larvae survive → no adults emerge → no glowing.
LIGHT POLLUTION: Fireflies communicate with bioluminescence. Your porch light, landscape lighting, and motion sensors DROWN their signals. Males can't see female responses. No mating → no eggs → no next generation.
HABITAT LOSS: Moist meadows and forest edges converted to lawns and pavement.
Your parents caught fireflies because their parents left the leaves, didn't spray, and turned off the porch light.
You spray. You blow. You light. Your kids watch YouTube videos of fireflies instead.
The fix: leave the leaves. Stop the chemicals. Turn off the lights after 9 PM. In 2-3 years: the fireflies come back. Your kids will see what you saw. If you let them.

Our next project underway! We had to use the Bobcat to remove a ton of tiger lilies and grass from along the street. We will be turning this into a whole new wildflower bed.

The front of the house was being overwhelmed with white and purple cone flower and some rudbeckia that we divided up and potted for now.

We also dug up about a dozen various shrubs from here.

We created a new little bed in the corner of the property off the driveway that was just grass. Just started this layout.

And in the back, in the next couple of days, we will be digging up and transplanting and redesigning all of the backyard plants.

In the end, we will be adding about 200 new native perennials and shrubs and trees.

Heavy rain today, so all projects cancelled. Especially the one where we were going to be using a Bobcat loader to dig up some beds of tiger lilies and other plants that will be replaced with natives. THAT would have turned into a mud pit.
