Wildflower Meadows Landscape Design Specializing in design & installation of native, sustainable and ecological landscapes. We all have an opportunity to change how we utilize the land we live on.

Native landscape design, pollinator garden design, cottage gardens, perennial garden design, and ponds, as well as removing lawns and invasive species of plants. Our forests, wetlands, native plants and meadows are disappearing at an exponential rate. With increased land clearing for commercial use, and overly manicured and sterile landscapes at our homes, we are continually diminishing the natural resources our native plants, wildlife and pollinators demand to support ecological balance. We believe this can be counterbalanced with sensible landscape design and practices that create havens for nature in all of it's forms. Everyone can make a difference, even with minor changes to their outdoor spaces! In addition, our mission is to create sanctuaries that are beneficial to our own body, soul and mental health. It has been proven that interactions between humans, gardens and wildlife can help relieve stress and anxiety, enhance the lives of special needs children and adults, and generally create a sense of mindful presence. Leave the leaves wherever you can! Clear leaves from walkways and away from structures. Other than that, there is NO reason to perform a leaf cleanup other than to "look pretty" according to outdated concepts.

We wanted to share just a few of our most recently completed projects!

Over the winter, we’ll be posting individual BEFORE & AFTER photos from these and other properties so you can see just how dramatic some of these transformations have been.

Each project involved removing lawn, old and tired landscaping, invasive plants, or a combination of all three, and replacing them with beautiful, thoughtfully designed landscapes.

These gardens were designed by us and contain at least 80% native plant species, creating landscapes that aren’t just beautiful, but provide valuable habitat and food for birds 🐦, bees 🐝, butterflies 🦋, hummingbirds and other wildlife.

🌷🌼 FALL BULB PLANTING SEASON IS HERE! 🌷🌼

Hello folks!

We are now scheduling our Fall Bulb Planting, so sign up now if you want a beautiful burst of color in your garden next spring!

Crocus, Daffodils, Alliums, Tulips, Hyacinths and many other spring-flowering bulbs MUST be planted in the fall, and after a long Connecticut winter, there is nothing quite like seeing those first flowers emerge! 🌷🌱🌼

We expect to begin planting around mid-October and continue into early November. We will be ordering beautiful, fresh, healthy bulbs for our clients, but we need to get those orders in soon.

ORDERS MUST BE IN BY OCTOBER 4TH!

White Wood Aster is one of those native plants that deserves a lot more attention.

Here are some photos of White Wood Aster (Eurybia divaricata) mixed naturally into a local Newtown garden that we designed, installed and continue to maintain. It’s a great example of how this true Connecticut native can be incorporated into a designed landscape without the garden looking wild or unkempt.

White Wood Aster is an excellent choice for those partly shaded and shady areas where many of our more familiar flowering perennials struggle. It naturally grows along woodland edges and in open woods, making it perfect beneath deciduous trees, along the edge of a wooded property, in a shade garden, or mixed among native ferns, sedges and other woodland plants.

Its small white flowers appear in late summer into fall, providing an important source of nectar and pollen when many other plants have finished blooming. The flowers attract native bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects, while the plant itself helps create the layered habitat that supports wildlife in a healthy garden.

And perhaps one of its best qualities: White Wood Aster requires almost no care once established. It tolerates shade, relatively dry conditions and competition from tree roots remarkably well. There is generally no need for fertilizing, constant watering or fussing over it.

It WILL spread when it is happy, and in the right conditions it can become a little aggressive. But that isn't necessarily a bad thing—especially when you're trying to create a living ground layer that can compete with w**ds. If it wanders somewhere you don't want it, it is relatively easy to edit out of the garden and keep within the area you've given it.

Japanse Stilt Grass Alert!

If you have Japanese stiltgrass invading your yard, NOW IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST TIME TO TACKLE IT.

Here is what you need to know to win the battle!

It is a strict annual: It does not survive the winter like a perennial. Every single plant you see grew from a seed this year, and every plant will die with the first frost.

Pull it after the rain: Stiltgrass has incredibly shallow roots. If it rained recently, grab a pair of gloves. It pulls out of the ground with almost zero effort.

Weed-whack to stop seeds: If you have too much to pull, grab your w**d whacker. Cut it down continually right now to prevent any seed heads from forming. Because it is an annual, if it cannot make seeds, it cannot reproduce.

Avoid pre-emergents (like Preen): Chemical pre-emergents can harm the dormant seeds of beneficial native plants you actually want in your yard.

It is a marathon, not a sprint: Stiltgrass seeds can stay viable in the soil for a few years. It is virtually impossible to clear that existing underground seed bank all at once.

Consistency is key! It requires a yearly chore of pulling or whacking, but you will see the outbreaks diminish each season.
As an example, it took me 3 years of using this exact method to completely eliminate it on my own property. Stick with it, keep those seed heads off, and you will win the long game!

🌸 THIS FALL, THINK BEYOND MUMS! 🌸

Mums may be everywhere this time of year, but if you want beautiful fall color and a plant that actually gives back to our local ecosystem, consider planting New England Aster instead!

Native to Connecticut, New England Aster produces masses of gorgeous purple-to-violet flowers in late summer and fall, just when many other plants are beginning to fade. Even better, those flowers provide an important late-season source of nectar and pollen for native bees, butterflies and other pollinators preparing for winter or migration.

And unlike the mums we often buy each fall and toss at the end of the season, New England Aster is a hardy native perennial. Plant it once and enjoy it year after year. It returns each spring, grows larger and more beautiful as it establishes, and becomes part of a living, functioning garden rather than just seasonal decoration.

We absolutely love getting photos like this from our clients!

A monarch caterpillar on swamp milkw**d that we planted earlier this year as part of a native garden installation. We included several different varieties of milkw**d, so seeing this is incredibly rewarding. THIS is why we do what we do, and why we love it. 😊

This is now the 5th property this year where we've found monarch caterpillars in gardens we designed and planted. It's such a wonderful feeling to know these gardens are already making a difference.
