Welcome back to Broadway!

Broadway has always been symbolic of the life, energy, diversity, and spirit of New York City and as designers and patrons of the theatre we are thrilled to celebrate the end of the longest shut down in history.

Our rich history of working on Broadway includes the 1997 restoration of the historic New Amsterdam Theatre, also originally touted as “The House Beautiful.” The Theatre opened that year with the premiere of Disney’s animated film, Hercules. Later that year it became the original home of the highest grossing musical of all time, The Lion King. In 2014, Aladdin opened as the third production ever played on the new stage and continues to be one of Broadway’s biggest blockbuster hits. Over 113 years later, the New Amsterdam is the oldest operating theatre of Broadway and an official New York City landmark.

What’s the first show you’ll be seeing?

Happy Earth Day! Today and every day, we acknowledge our responsibility as designers to engage the issues of sustainability and become stewards of natural growth. Because of our commitment to communities, sustainability — environmental, economic, and social — play a key role in our design approach and everyday lives. Sustainable design flows naturally from our intent to provide design that positively serves our clients. Our team is at the forefront of sustainable and environmentally responsible building design, with many of our recent projects having achieved or are anticipating LEED Certification, ranging from Certified to Platinum.

Join us today, November 12th at 11:00 am, for a panel discussion on the challenges our cultural facilities are currently facing and will continue to tackle. The esteemed panel will share their experiences, and examine examples of how, in the past, the built environment has nurtured and cultivated the arts and the artist, and improved the surrounding community. Founded in 1908, the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) is America’s oldest performing arts center. In our 20+ years relationship, H3 has worked on the restoration of its original building and designed and implemented several new facilities as part of an overall renewal plan for its neighborhood. The creation of the BAM Cultural District has helped create an energetic, diverse, culturally-driven section of Downtown Brooklyn. A catalyst for development, the District has helped foster $1B+ dollars of investment into new arts and cultural facilities, thousands of new residential units, and a number of new boutique hotels.

Restoration of BAM’s exterior façade (seen here) included reconstruction of the 15-foot-tall parapet and cornice, restoration of terra-cotta ornamentation, brickwork and lintels, refurbishment of stained-glass windows, signage and enhanced handicapped accessibility.

Happy ! This month long festival of Architecture & Design in NYC will always be of particular importance to us. H3’s roots and ethos are born of New York City. For decades, our firm has been instrumental in the transformation of important cultural buildings and neighborhoods in New York, such as the BAM Cultural District, where we designed a new home for Theatre for a New Audience at the Polonsky Shakespeare Center.
The design of TFANA reflects the building’s function as a laboratory for modern theatrical interpretation of classical plays. The simple form of the building belies its structural complexity and intricate acoustical isolation from the city’s exterior and subterranean noise.
The intimate darkness of the proscenium theater sets a stark contrast to the soaring, naturally lit lobby. The finishes and furniture in the theater are all black with no visual distraction from the activity on stage. Theater seating on three level brings the audience close to the performers and is reconfigurable for changing performances.
Like a Theatre for a New Audience production, the new building brings a powerful, yet nuanced new presence to the BAM Cultural District.

“It's such a departure from the dinner-and-a-show model. Here, it's a drink and a show and a drink.”
For this weeks we are highlighting LCT3’s Claire Tow Theater at New York City’s Lincoln Center. The 112-seat theater is housed in a two-story structure built on a steel truss that straddles the roof of the Vivian Beaumont Theater.
Before or after performances, theatergoers can mingle amongst each other and often the artists over drinks at a roofdeck bar that overlooks a spectacular vista of Lincoln Center and the surrounding neighborhood.
We are certainly looking forward to next Spring when we can visit and enjoy these spectacular venues again.
