Here is a moment of reflection and spotlight on an Iris Legend. Anyone who knows the world of Iris knows the name Keith Keppel. I’m willing to bet that if you, anywhere in the world, have a collection of Bearded Irises in your garden that either you or someone you know has his varieties mixed in. He’s known as the “Plicata Man” for a reason, but hasn’t only introduced Plicatas over the years. Keith’s first intros were in the 1960s and even though he’s in his 90s today, that still hasn’t stopped this Iris legend from making two gorgeous introductions this year. We are looking forward to their 2027 bloom at our home in particular “Fashion Frills” for its outstanding ruffles. Terry and Tony over at FarWest Iris Gardens have acquired Keith’s varieties and seedlings. Keith is now introducing out of FarWest Iris Gardens and his legacy and awards will continue to live on for many more decades to come. Keith has pushed the realm of Iris hybridization and paved the way for many to build off of his hard work and dedication. Pictured here are a few Plicatas that we wanted to spotlight. The first three are named varieties we have at home. “Pastel Patterns”, “Tuscan Summer”, “Drama Queen.” The next four pictured are a few of his Plicata seedlings from pics that I took at 12 years old in his yard with him that may potentially be introduced one day. Cheers to a Legend who and I quote Mr. Keppel, “Doesn’t give up!” Keith Keppel

Happy 14th Birthday on August 14th to Dylan! We are so proud of the hard working boy you are. Continue to pursue your passions in life. Don’t let anyone stop you or tell you that you can’t or you’re incapable. We are so proud of all you have accomplished in just a short while. From running track, to playing bass and electric guitar, to fishing, crabbing, and of course hybridizing irises. We love you! - Mom & Dad

For those of you who support Dylan along his Iris journey, THANK YOU! It truly takes a village and Dylan has learned and grown so much, much in part to all of you who challenge him to learn and grow in the Iris world. Please feel free to leave him a loving birthday message. He will read them all.
