🚧 Fresh Concrete Damage — What Would Be the Proper Repair?
I’m looking for some advice on how to handle a frustrating situation with a newly poured driveway.
The crew had just completed the concrete when someone apparently drove across the surface while it was still fresh, leaving tire tracks along a significant portion of the driveway. The damage is even more noticeable in person, with the tire impressions clearly visible across the surface.
Unfortunately, our cameras did not capture the vehicle. One camera showed the workers finishing cleanup around 4:09, and by approximately 4:30, a neighbor had already noticed the tire marks.
The concrete contractor has suggested applying a skim coat over the affected areas for an additional charge. Before agreeing to that, however, I’d like to know whether this is considered a durable repair or simply a temporary cosmetic solution that could become noticeable again after several winters, pressure washing, and normal use.
I’m also questioning whether the driveway should have been secured more thoroughly while the concrete was curing. There were stakes and boards around the perimeter, but apparently they were not enough to prevent someone from accessing the surface.
At this point, I’m trying to determine the most reasonable course of action: pay for the proposed repair, file an insurance claim, or ask the concrete contractor for a more comprehensive solution.
For those with concrete experience, would you trust a skim coat in this situation, or would you recommend repairing or replacing the affected section properly?
Any advice from contractors or homeowners who have dealt with similar damage would be greatly appreciated. 🏗️
