In the 1960s and ’70s, the Italian design collective Superstudio protested modern urban design by poking fun at the status quo and imagining its own utopias. "One photo collage series, called “Continuous Monument,” depicts a monolithic shape slicing through deserts, spanning the Grand Canyon and gliding over the Hudson River to superimpose Lower Manhattan’s grid with its own lattice design. This form’s unstoppable advancement through natural and urban landscapes seems to warn against the dulling effect of clean modern lines and the dangers of unchecked urban expansion....... Also on display...are the group’s range of lurid-colored sofas, which mock the ’60s fe**sh for functional design, and “Supersurface,” a series of drawings and collages that show nomads roaming a fantasy landscape, freed of consumerist desire."

Here's to #2021 - and to Hope for Kindness & Wisdom once again (futile though often that hope may prove to be....) But here's to those who try, to those who do and to those who genuinely care for the ecological systems on this planet.

Many people want to know how to help wildlife, whether it’s birds and butterflies–or larger folk, like the raccoon that rang our doorbell at four in the morning. One of the best ways, if you control even a small amount of property, is to manage that property in the best interests of wildlife–w...

"They decided to turn to nature for a solution and in 2001, set about "rewilding" the estate. Knepp is now home to an astonishing array of biodiversity and has become a celebrated conservation success story, attracting many rare species and transforming the landscape from English country farm to untamed wilderness.
"We were living in a biological desert," says Tree. "Now, ecologists are blown away all the time by just the amount of life here."

Concrete is responsible for about 8% of global carbon emissions (while the construction industry as a whole is responsible for a much larger %-age, in addition to producing toxic waste, and in the case of subdivision development, destroying tree-d areas and ecosystems when not designed/planned properly.).
Several companies are working to create a more environmentally friendly mix of concrete.

"If our communities are ever going to reopen during the pandemic...they need to find more ways to keep people apart and to make better use of outdoor space.
That’s the premise behind Design for Distancing, a planning initiative in Baltimore that has brought architects and public health experts together to develop tactical solutions for modifying city streets and sidewalks so they work better for the restaurants, stores, and services that are seeking to reopen after the long government-imposed lockdown."

Baltimore's Design for Distancing project tasked designers with developing low-cost ways to encourage residents to visit businesses while keeping them safe.
