At RFK Contracting, one of the most common trends we see is homeowners choosing lower-priced roofing estimates without realizing what has been removed from the scope of work to reduce the cost.
One of the biggest differences is the quality of the ice and water protection system. Many lower bids utilize economy-grade ice guard products that can cost as little as $60 per roll. In comparison, we use premium products such as Grace Select®, which costs approximately $105.96 per roll, and Grace Ice & Water Shield® 40 Mil, which costs approximately $210.96 per roll.
Grace products are widely regarded as the industry standard for ice dam protection. Their aggressive self-sealing adhesive technology creates a superior watertight barrier around nails and fasteners, helping protect your home from leaks caused by ice dams, wind-driven rain, and water infiltration. The stronger adhesive also makes installation more labor-intensive, which is another factor often reflected in the price difference between estimates.
In addition, RFK Contracting installs CertainTeed-approved roofing systems, including premium underlayments and accessories designed to work together as a complete roofing system. This may qualify eligible homeowners for CertainTeed’s extended warranty options, including coverage up to 50 years when all manufacturer requirements are met.
While extended warranties are available through the manufacturer, RFK Contracting provides a 25-Year Manufacturer Warranty and a 10-Year Workmanship Warranty on qualifying projects. We have chosen this approach because, after nearly two decades in the roofing industry, we believe in providing realistic expectations based on real-world performance. While modern roofing systems are significantly improved, we have rarely seen asphalt shingle roofs in Central New York consistently exceed 30 years of service life due to our climate and weather conditions.
One thing you absolutely cannot afford to cheap out on is your roof. A low price today can often lead to costly repairs, premature replacement, interior damage, and higher expenses in the future. The cheapest bid is rarely the least expensive roof over its lifetime.
Another trend we see far too often is homeowners contacting us shortly after having a new roof installed by a lower-priced contractor. In many cases, the roof is only months or a few years old, yet they are already experiencing leaks, ice dam issues, moisture infiltration, or ventilation-related problems.
Unfortunately, we regularly receive calls from homeowners whose original contractor is either unresponsive or unwilling to address these issues. Many end up hiring RFK Contracting to inspect the roof, remove ice dams, identify the source of leaks, and recommend corrective measures on what should still be considered a new roofing system.
While no roof is completely immune to severe weather conditions, proper installation practices significantly reduce the likelihood of these problems. Premium ice and water protection, proper attic ventilation, quality underlayments, and correct flashing details are critical components of a roofing system. When these items are overlooked to achieve a lower price point, the homeowner often ends up paying for it later through repairs, emergency service calls, and ongoing maintenance concerns.
My name is Ryan Kinzie, owner of RFK Contracting. I personally oversee every installation and have been installing roofing systems for nearly 20 years. I believe homeowners deserve transparency about the products being installed on their homes and the long-term impact those choices can have.
We encourage homeowners to compare estimates carefully. When roofing decisions are based solely on price, homeowners often end up with lower-grade materials, reduced installation standards, and shorter roof lifespans. The true value of a roofing system is determined by the quality of the materials, workmanship, and attention to detail—not simply the lowest number on an estimate.
At RFK Contracting, we understand we may not always be the lowest-priced estimate. Our goal is not to be the cheapest contractor. Our goal is to provide one of the highest-quality roofing systems available, installed correctly the first time, using premium materials that protect your home for years to come.
When comparing roofing estimates, look beyond the final number. Ask about the underlayment, ice and water protection, ventilation system, flashing details, warranty qualifications, and installation methods. These are the components that determine how your roof performs years after the project is complete.
A roof is only as good as the system beneath the shingles.
