NIOSH 5000 Testing for Post Fire Air Quality Assessment
A fire in itself is very devastating to a home or business. After a fire, the air inside of a building can remain hazardous for a long period after the flames are put out. Soot, ash, and fine particles of matter often stay stuck in the air and settle on the surfaces. These particles are mostly made up of elemental carbon, which is what the NIOSH 5000 testing method is designed to measure.
NIOSH 5000 testing is commonly used to test for airborne carbon black in industrial settings, but it is also a valuable tool for post fire air quality assessments. Fires make large amounts of carbon based soot that can cause respiratory risks to occupants and restoration workers. By measuring the concentration of carbon particulates in the air, NIOSH 5000 testing helps determine whether the indoor environment is safe for cleanup and/or re occupancy.
Air samples are collected using calibrated pumps and filters during normal activities such as debris removal, cleaning, or ventilation. The samples are then analyzed in a third party laboratory to measure the amount of carbon black present in the air. Results are given in milligrams per cubic meter measurement and compared to the available occupational exposure guidelines.
Why is this important?
