When decorating a room with wallpaper, the smallest details can make the biggest visual impact.

Trying to save a few feet of wallpaper can cost you a seamless design. Sometimes the difference between a good installation and a great one is knowing when NOT to save material.

So we have to wait a week on this Metairie LA wallpaper installation for another roll to arrive. The customer ordered an additional role over what the online calculation reflected and we still came up short.

This shows that even manufacturer's accommodate more mismatch than what is befitting a perfect installation.

Sometimes, you get the bid wrong. What matters is what you do next.

I recently took on a wallpaper installation that I estimated would take about two hours.

Seven hours later, I was finally wrapping up.

I seriously underestimated the time this installation would require. It happens, even with years of experience. But I've always believed that the true measure of a business isn't how it operates when everything goes according to plan. It's how it responds when things don't.

I had two choices: rush through the installation to salvage whatever profitability I could, or accept that I had underbid the job and give it the time and attention it deserved.

I chose to double down on quality.

I slowed down, paid attention to every detail, and took as long as necessary to get it right.

The result? Genuinely one of the best wallpaper installations I've ever completed.

Did I make the money I expected? Absolutely not.

Did my customer receive the quality of work I promised? Absolutely.

My estimating mistake was mine to absorb, not my customer's to experience.

Profitability matters. Running a successful business requires it. But protecting your margins at the expense of your workmanship is a much more expensive mistake in the long run.

Sometimes the profit isn't in the job itself. It's in the reputation you build by doing the right thing when nobody would know if you didn't.

**The fastest way to get treated like crap is to say yes to immediate booking requests without a fight.**

Your customer hears one thing: "this person has nothing else going on." Or they subconsciously believe that their needs outweigh those of your other customers.

Your time looks cheap. Then your labor looks cheap. Then your whole business does.

When you're booked, hold the line. You can move things around if needed, but it shouldn't be your first choice. And when you do, say so: "I'm reworking my schedule to fit you in." Let them know it cost you something.

Here's what I say instead:

"I'm booked right now, but I keep a waiting list and I'll gladly add you. I'll even see what I can do to get you moved up."

That tells them you're serious, you're busy because you're serious, and you won't bump another customer's project just because someone asked. Everyone respects that, because nobody wants to be the one getting bumped!

Your schedule is your inventory. Don't give it away.
