Did y’all know Julia used to manage a local plant nursery before Working Hands NOLA existed?

Before that, she led an all-female landscape crew that maintained over 40 gardens throughout the Garden District, Uptown, the Bywater, and the French Quarter.

Long before the built-ins, renovations, and outdoor transformations, there were flower pots. Lots and lots of flower pots. šŸ¤“šŸŒø

Here are some favorite arrangements from the archives. Looking back through these photos reminds me how much joy there is in having something beautiful to look at every day. The smallest planting can completely transform a space. Suddenly, something ordinary becomes charming, refreshed, and just a little more magical.

As a completely shameless plug: we’re between projects right now. So if there’s something outside that’s been bugging you every time you pull into the driveway, sit on the porch, walk through the gate, or look out the kitchen window, send us a message. We love making those kinds of things better. It’s important to be as happy as you can these days.

And a friendly reminder: it’s hot out here, y’all. Check your irrigation. šŸŒæšŸ’¦

✨ New favorite seat in the house!

This under-the-stairs space was an empty cubby collecting possibilities. A few days of custom carpentry later…and now it’s a cozy dining nook built for coffee, conversation, and lingering a little longer.

Custom cushions and a round table are next, but we’re already picturing rainy New Orleans afternoons tucked in here. ā˜”ļø

Had the absolute pleasure this week of installing this dreamy perennial garden in the backyard of the even dreamier ✨

Rainy-day planting, muddy hands and boots, and that very good feeling of getting to help a space hold a little more beauty than it did before. The butterflies were already coming out to check out their new digs through the gaps in afternoon storms.

We love a swoopy brick border with layers of plantings that will grow in, and lord, do we love a pollinator garden. Hannah is a joy to work with and we can’t wait to come back when this one is lush, full grown, and buzzing!

Garen and Julia here to tell you the big news from our corner of New Orleans!

We’re now officially licensed as a non-structural interior + exterior renovation studio.

What started as woodworking has grown into design-driven work across homes and outdoor spaces. Built-ins, patios, pergolas, outdoor kitchens, finish carpentry, planters—and the landscapes that tie it all together in a way that feels well-suited for how life is lived here.

Garen leads the build and design work, focused on creating spaces that are beautiful, functional, and built to last. Julia brings the plant and landscape side, shaping how spaces soften, grow, and settle into the environment over time.

This is the season where we’re building our portfolio, growing this business, and working hard to shape a career around the work we love to do together.

If you’ve got a space that needs a little love, or a project (big or small) in mind, we’d love to hear about it. ā¤ļø

A couple months ago, we teamed up with one of our favorite local growers, Baby T Rex Farms, to collaborate on their farmers market setup, and this week we got to see it in action. 🄹

We built this display stand + bouquet holder from really gorgeous 65-year-old walnut, and it’s so fun to see it at the market in its element.

Getting to work with other small businesses like this is easily our favorite part of what we do. If you haven’t yet, stop by their table at the Tuesday uptown farmer’s market for local honey, bouquets, veggie starts and more! šŸŒ±šŸ’

Hi guys! Sorry we’ve been such strangers on here lately. We had an awesome Christmas market season, and after the new year decided to take a break from the studio to focus on renovation work. We’ve done a whole bunch of client projects over the last few months, and it’s been a really fun mix.

We’ve demoed kitchen shelving and installed beautiful custom walnut shelves that Garen made, rebuilt and repainted antique cypress doors, painted almost the entire interior of a 3,000 square foot house (!), repaired and reinstalled mantels, patched floors and matched original stains, built gardens, and about a hundred other things.

I also started taking on part-time gardening work again, and it’s been really nice to have my hands back in the dirt and work with private clients.

These aren’t the most amazing photos I’ve ever taken, but they’re a few snapshots from the past couple of months. It’s been really satisfying to watch our little woodworking studio evolve into a husband-and-wife renovation duo.

Next week we’re tearing out linoleum and restoring original heart pine floors in a client’s kitchen — not for the faint of heart, but everything’s easier when you’re working with your best friend.

Ideally, we’d love to keep building outdoor spaces that use both of our specialties, Garen’s woodworking/construction and my gardening.

It feels like we’ll be focusing on renovation work this summer while the studio heats up, and we’re excited to see where it goes.

As always, send us a message if you have a space you’re ready to update, a garden that needs tending, or both šŸ¤
